How Working Jobs Affects Rutgers Online Students

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Between early morning shifts and late night homework, many Rutgers online students are squeezing full-time jobs into already packed school schedules.

Rutgers online student, Corneila, usually starts her day in a Dunkin uniform, not in a classroom. She loves school, but says, “…a lot of my professors put in so many assignments all at once and it is hard to manage that while working at Dunkin.” This experience is common for many Rutgers students who are trying to balance their jobs and school work. Cornelia emphasizes the difficulty in managing her time, stress, and sleep.

For Cornelia, a good way to help manage time and stress is by creating a visual calendar. She writes down her tasks throughout the week, which includes classwork as well as work schedules, and organizes them to best fit her schedule.

By seeing the calendar Cornelia created on her bedroom wall, it makes it easier and less overwhelming to plan her work, “I love being a Rutgers student even though my schedule is busy and overwhelming.” Many Rutgers students, including Cornelia, rely on physical organization tools like calendars to manage their stress and stay on top of their work.

Ashley, another Rutgers student, shared that she often finds herself stressed with the piling amounts of coursework on top of her day job, “I would be lying if I never considered stopping school so I could focus on work.”

Ashley works in a computer related job, “I always say yes to things, and it ends up taking a toll on me.” She stated that she learned from counseling how setting boundaries is an important part of taking care of herself. She now tries not to overcommit, she has learned that saying no can protect her mental health and her sleep.

There are also many campus resources students can turn to help manage work and school. Tutoring and writing help from CLASS or the WDL can give them extra support so they do not fall behind in classes. The Wellness Center also offers workshops and counseling services for students looking for stress and learning tools as well as mental health help. All of these resources are available on campus or online.
