Research at Rutgers–Camden
At Rutgers–Camden, a R2 research university, student research is emphasized by professors and their departments. But how do students feel about the use of research in their classes?
“I recommend that other students do research for their assignments because it will allow them to have a better understanding of the topic they are presenting or discussing. Research solidifies ideas and presents them in an organized manner,” Christopher Darling, a sophomore majoring in data science, stated.
Many college students will have to complete a research essay or project at some point within their college career. There may be challenges and advantages to gathering data and field research, but there are resources available at Rutgers Camden University, such as the Writing and Design Lab that assist students with completing research papers.
According to the Rutgers Camden website “The Writing and Design Lab (WDL) is a multiliteracy center housed in the Rutgers-Camden Digital Commons at 101 Cooper Street. The WDL supports students working in a variety of genres and media, from traditional academic papers to multimodal compositions. A 21st century writing center, the WDL recognizes the role of technology at every stage of the composing process and the importance of design in the effective communication of ideas.”
Darling has experienced the process of doing research and applying the information, explaining, “I have done research for an essay before… The topic was about waste due to overconsumption of food within our households. As well as the contribution we make to significant amounts of waste per year. I also learned about the average wasteful consumption of grocery products in the United States… I had a positive experience because it broadened my knowledge on the topic and sharpened my writing skills.”
Zoe Petroski, a senior majoring in art history, is currently working on an independent study with one of her professors. Petroski shared, “It’s one of the options recommended for my degree, so I kind of just heard about it when registering for my classes… The research required goes in depth way beyond a normal college class project… I was surprised at how open ended it is, it gives the students a lot of freedom.”
Petroski recommended the independent study program, explaining, “Especially if there’s a specific area that you’d like to learn more about.”
Field research and collecting data has its advantages and disadvantages, nonetheless it may be an important skill for college students to obtain to help them navigate college assignments. Using writing-focused tools such as the WDL may help with the step-by-step process as well as support from peers.
