Full-time students in America struggle to stay financially afloat. In 2025, the American Consumer Price Index for all items rose by 2.7%. By the end of 2025, New Jersey ranked among the 10 most expensive states to live in according to World Population Review. The average cost of living in the country is expected to keep rising, so it’s going to be important to stay ahead of the curve.

Nicholas Reale is a senior at Rutgers–Camden. He has a hard time earning a satisfactory income due to his decreased availability. He mentioned that most of his days are spent on campus, so his weekly hours at work have suffered. As much as he recognizes the importance of going to school, he knows the accompanying tribulations well.

“On top of being a full time student, I still have bills to pay and I have to work”, said Reale. “I know going to school will help me make more money in the future but as of right now, things are tough.”

In spite of these hardships, Reale has managed to get by over the past few years. He found budgeting his spending to be especially useful. He recommended breaking down expenses over a three month period to come up with an average number. From there, he suggested using that as a guide to determine how much you can realistically spend in the future.

Reale also stressed the importance of FAFSA. He encouraged students to look into the program, noting that the NJ Pell Grant has lifted much of the burden from his tuition. He shared, “You need to get into FAFSA. It is the only reason why I am able to go to school.” He said that FAFSA could be more affordable than people think. He specifically proposed becoming an independent applicant to reduce costs.

Jennifer Gonzalez is a former student from Rutgers–Newark. She graduated with a double major and took five courses per semester. She often felt stretched thin between a multitude of responsibilities. Even with a steady source of income, it wasn’t easy for her to meet her goals. Her part time job had a negative impact on her academic performance.

Gonzalez explained, “Financing through that was a little bit better but my time became so much worse. It really made it difficult to give my best effort in all of my courses.”

However, she was able to make ends meet through a handful of campus resources. She highlighted on-campus jobs as good opportunities for students because of their flexible scheduling. Paid internships allowed her to make money while also pursuing career goals. She also recommended resources such as the Student Food Pantry, which provides free meals to volunteers. The Food Pantry is available at all Rutgers locations.

When reflecting on her college experience, Gonzalez appreciated how it taught her to prioritize a balanced lifestyle. In order to get the most out of their investments, she urged students to be mindful of how they’re dividing their time.

“A failed class is essentially money you won’t get back”, she said. “Nobody wants to end up with more debt than necessary.” She believes that it’s important to only take on what you can handle, or else financial stress could become life stress.

Those at Rutgers are not alone in their financial struggles. With the proper skills, these challenges can at the very least be mitigated. By carefully budgeting one’s expenses and time, students can improve their spending habits and mental wellbeing. By engaging with campus resources, they can find the proper support while also staying on top of their classes.

At Rutgers Camden many first year students are not utilizing office hours provided by professors. This tool is given to students to allow them to get clarification on schoolwork, get extra help with the course load outside of class hours, and ask questions one on one with professors rather than in front of an entire class. However, freshmen have commented that they struggle with taking advantage of this academic resource. Many say they feel nervous or even unsure of how to come to their professors.

Office hours can be defined as scheduled times professors set aside outside of the class for a more hands-on and individual conversation with students. This is to ensure that students do not feel disconnected from their professors and also give them a safe space to express their needs, whereas in class they may feel less comfortable doing so.

According to Professor Cavanaugh, a professor at Rutgers Camden University, office hours are a crucial part of academic success. She even went as far as to say, “They obtain more personalized feedback about how to approach assignments and their career goals.” Along with this, the professor mentioned that she has seen upperclassmen utilize this tool far more than first year students using office hours.

Gizelle Lizardi is a freshman at Rutgers Camden currently in her first spring semester in college. She mentioned that there has been a major transition period moving from high school to college. Not just with the lifestyle, but also with academics. Many freshmen are still

adjusting to college academics compared to high school. Not to mention that office hours are not always mandatory nor specifically talked about in class. While some professors may encourage students to come to see them early in the semester, these announcements tend to fall flat. Many first year students like Gizelle find going to office hours uncomfortable.

Lizardi said, “I do not feel comfortable approaching a professor outside of class. I probably would never approach one if I saw them somewhere.” She then went on to say that she believes these feelings of being nervous is most likely the main cause of lack of first year students attending office hours, “I think the main factor is nervousness. Many students probably don’t want to be the only ones there and also don’t want to spend the time there.” Another interesting conclusion she had was that there is less structure in college academics compared to in high school. The freshman stated, “There’s no one telling me what to do, I have to take initiative on my own learning experience, it’s strange”.

While there is an adjustment to college academics, office hours can be used as a tool to bridge the gap between a student and professor in the classroom setting. Professors have found that the students that choose to attend office hours have found great success in their academics. Professor Cavanaugh believes that it improves one’s understanding of the course material. It can also further reinforce relationships with Rutgers Camden professors, which can be helpful later on for recommendations, and even shows students that they are able to take initiative for their grades. Professors at Rutgers Camden urge first year students to become familiar with the process of using office hours and to take advantage of these opportunities.

Rutgers-Camden students looking for quiet places to work may find fewer options later in the evening, as some study areas close earlier than campus buildings. The issue affects students who commute, work jobs, or spend long stretches on campus and rely on study space outside regular class hours.

The concern becomes more noticeable around midterms and finals, when more students are trying to find places to read, write, and prepare for exams. While some campus facilities stay open later, not all spaces offer the same level of privacy or quiet.

Paul Robeson Library remains open until 10 p.m. during most of the semester and the Campus Center stays open until 11 p.m.. While library hours are extended during finals week, some dedicated study spaces close earlier which can leave students with fewer quiet options as the evening goes on.

Jennifer Levy, president of the Rutgers-Camden Student Governing Association, said late-night study space has not recently been a major complaint among students: “To my knowledge, late night study spaces have not been brought up as a concern by students recently.”

Levy said the commuter makeup of Rutgers-Camden helps explain that response. Because many students leave campus after classes end, she said fewer people may be looking for study space late at night than at schools with larger residential populations.

“Given that our student population is primarily commuters, the majority of people studying late on campus are slim,” Levy said.

At the same time, Levy said the commuter nature of the campus creates a different need. Many students remain on campus between classes and may be looking less for very late-night access and more for private, functional places to study during busy daytime hours.

“That being said, it also means the availability of spaces during the day time, peak student hours, may be limited,” Levy continued.

Levy shared that student feedback has been focused more on the need for private or closed-off study areas than on extending building hours. She said commuter students in particular may benefit from spaces where they can work between classes without distractions: “Feedback heard has been to provide more private areas for students, specifically commuter students, to use in between classes.”

She pointed to possible improvements within spaces that already exist on campus. More enclosed areas in the library, she said, could help improve access, and updates to common student areas could create more secluded places for students who need quiet.

Levy also said some newer campus spaces, including The Bridge, already offer more closed-off areas. Even so, she said space remains a practical limitation.

“The biggest barrier to creating more spaces is the lack of available space within campus buildings,” Levy continued. That limitation may shape how quickly any changes can happen. In the longer term, future development projects could create opportunities for more study areas or redesigned student spaces. Levy said the Cooper Street Gateway project, expected in 2027, may eventually open the door for that kind of expansion.

For now, the discussion appears to center less on keeping campus open later and more on whether Rutgers-Camden has enough suitable study spaces when students actually need them most. On a commuter campus, that may mean rethinking how existing spaces are used during the day as much as it means looking at evening hours.

Ramadan is a time for reflection, devotion, and strength for many Muslim students, an entire month is dedicated to praying, and getting closer to their religion. However, with the constant demands of college, balancing both your personal life and your academic life can be extremely difficult, especially with certain challenges that come with participating in Ramadan.

The month of Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, meaning its specific date changes every year. Those celebrating Ramadan get up before dawn to have a meal before they start fasting until sunset. This is done every day for the month of Ramadan, alongside this Muslims also are required to pray 5 times a day, also spanning from sunrise to sunset. While this schedule seems manageable, it can be a struggle for college students to maintain alongside their academic responsibilities.

“College doesn’t slow down during Ramadan. Students are fasting from sunrise to sunset while still trying to keep up with schoolwork and extracurriculars” says Muslim Student Association President, Laiba Mahmood. Alongside having to deal with their daily schedule, Muslims students also have to do it while not feeling their best physically, this all can be especially demanding for students who dorm in college away from home, since their usual support system isn’t there.

Participating in Ramadan can also prohibit social activities, due to the fasting or praying many Muslim students may not be able to participate in social gathering events due to their own obligations. Some gatherings, like going out for lunch, may feel isolating since they aren’t able to participate as well.

“Professors and classmates sometimes don’t realize how physically demanding fasting can be, especially during long days of classes, exams, or work” says Nazifa Hasna, the MSA Secretary.

Participating in Ramadan takes up time and energy Muslim college students usually have, not having proper food accessibility for Muslim students adds onto their struggles. Many dining options are not halal for Muslim students, so food preparation on top of normal activities can be a difficult task for students, especially after fasting the entire day.

However, there are ways colleges are accommodating Muslim students during Ramadan, according to an article by Inside Higher Ed, several colleges have decided to implement accommodations for Muslim students, like extended dining hours for those who need to break their fast, or providing boxed meals. Other accommodations that can be given are different exam session times, so that Muslim students are able to take their exams after breaking their fast.

At Rutgers–Camden specifically, Ramadan events take place on campus such as the Community Iftar that occurred on March 2nd, in the Campus Center. There is also a Wudu station (a place where Muslims can wash themselves before prayer) in the Campus Center for Muslim students who need to pray. There are also several other Muslim-focused events that the MSA holds during the month of Ramadan, that anyone can participate in.

While it may be difficult to balance academics and the expectations of Ramadan, there are support systems out there for students. “Ramadan builds a really strong sense of community. Even though it’s challenging, students come together for iftars, prayers, and support, which makes the experience really special” says Nazifa Hasna. One of the main purposes of Ramadan is community, and while Muslims may have their struggles during the holy month, participating in your community, and devoting yourself to your religion makes it worth it for many individuals.

As part of Women’s History Month, we commemorate the accomplishments and history of women every March. The Mujeres Club at Rutgers-Camden is establishing areas for women on campus to get professional development, empowerment, and mentoring during this month. The group fosters a supportive community for students while showcasing Latina leadership through networking events, mentorship programs, and student-led projects.

Women’s History Month provides a chance for organizations throughout campus to honor women’s achievements while emphasizing the necessity of representation and leadership. For many students, clubs like Mujeres (which means women in Spanish) serve an important role in creating venues where women, particularly women of color, may support one another as they navigate college life. Mujeres promotes social and professional connections among students through events, mentorship initiatives, and networking opportunities.

The club wants to ensure students feel empowered to take on leadership roles, explore career choices, and form long-term relationships with peers and mentors. By bringing together students, alumni, and professionals, the organization seeks to build a network of women who can support and advise one another as they go through their academic and professional lives.

On March 26, 2026 in The Bridge office, the club is hosting EmpowHer, an all-female networking event that aims to connect undergraduate students with alumni and professionals.

President and co-founder Raizel Febles shared her motive behind the EmpowHer event, “The goal is to bring together like-minded professionals and alumni to interact and meet young women in their undergraduate journey. We want them to discuss how they got to where they are and explore different careers and avenues students might want to pursue.”

The event reflects the club’s broader mission to support women and create opportunities for connection across different stages of life and careers. The event highlights Latinas in dominant fields and shows how they empower others, while encouraging young Latina students to achieve the same success.

However, for Febles, she believes there is still room for greater representation within higher education leadership:

“I would love to see more Latinas in staff and faculty positions,” Febles said. “In higher roles such as deans or vice chancellors, we still lack Latina representation, and I would love to see us represented in those spaces.”

Public relations representative Isabella Bourdain expressed how the organization has helped foster a strong sense of belonging, “To me, being Latina on this campus means being part of a large network of people who genuinely look out for one another.” Bourdain continued, “Growing up, I didn’t really have a large community of Latina women around me, but now I can confidently say that I do.”

Bourdain explained that Mujeres is where Latina students can feel supported both socially and academically, “Mujeres creates a space on campus for all women, but especially Latina women, to grow and learn together. It’s a place where we can lean on one another, empower each other, and be authentically ourselves.”

Raizel Febels and Amaya Solar founded Mujeres with the goal of creating a Latin club focused on Latin women to establish a community of connection and events that would make students feel at home. The organization has various ways of connecting and establishing itself. For example, they have a mentorship program as a way of strengthening student ties. For example, the mana program matches upperclassmen with underclassmen who have similar majors to aid students in making the move to college.

According to Febles, creating community among Latina students is one of the organization’s core goals: “I love being a Latina at Rutgers–Camden,” Febles said. “I see so many students who have similar backgrounds and upbringings as me. Our culture and community has a strong presence on this campus.”

For many members, Mujeres provides more than just a student organization; it offers a sense of community and continues to empower students to support one another and pursue leadership opportunities on and off campus through events such as EmpowHer and through the mana program. As Women’s History Month continues, the club hopes that students will leave its events feeling empowered, connected, and confident in their skills.

Febles also expressed, for the fellow Rutgers-Camden Latinas, “What I hope people take from Mujeres events during Women’s History Month is that the world is literally ours. There is no limit to what we can accomplish, and there is a network of women looking to uplift young women in their journey.”

Attendance expectations vary widely across classrooms at Rutgers University, where some professors enforce strict policies others leave attendance optional. The variation means students often navigate different expectations from class to class depending on the professor and course format.

Across campus, attendance policies are often influenced by the size and structure of a course. Large lecture classes frequently do not track attendance, while smaller discussion-based courses tend to require students to attend regularly and participate in class activities.

DeJana L., a former Rutgers student, said many of her large lecture courses did not require students to attend class. “Pretty much all of my large lecture classes had no attendance policy,” DeJana said. “Because the classes were so large there would not be any attendance taken.”

Even without formal attendance requirements, she said lectures still created an incentive for students to attend in order to keep up with the material, “If you only showed up during exam days there was a high chance you wouldn’t do well if you skipped the lectures, so that was the motivation for attendance.”

Smaller courses, however, often operated differently. Classes focused on discussion, collaboration, or group projects typically had more structured attendance rules.

“Smaller, more discussion-based classes definitely had stricter attendance standards,” DeJana said. “Usually you were allotted a certain amount of absences, for example four unexcused absences for the semester.” According to DeJana, exceeding the allowed number of absences in these courses could sometimes result in grade penalties.

Michael K., a current Rutgers student, said his experience reflects similar differences across classes.

“It really depends on the professor,” Michael said. “Some classes have very strict attendance policies where missing more than a couple classes affects your grade, while others are much more flexible and treat attendance as optional.”

Michael shared that he believes flexible policies can be helpful for students who balance academic responsibilities with work, commuting, or other obligations outside of school: “I tend to prefer the more flexible policies because college students have different responsibilities outside the classroom,” he said. “In my experience, I’ve still been able to keep up with the material and perform well academically even in weeks when I couldn’t attend every class.”

While attendance policies are often intended to encourage engagement, students being physically present in class does not always guarantee that they are actively learning.

“I think it mostly ensures people show up rather than actually making them engaged,” Michael expressed. “Someone can be sitting in a classroom but not paying attention at all.”

DeJana expressed a similar perspective, noting, “Attendance doesn’t necessarily mean paying attention.” However, she added that attending lectures can still help students retain information, even if they are not actively taking notes during class, “Even if you show up to lecture and don’t take notes, if you are actively listening you’re bound to still absorb some information that you could later recall in exams.”

Attendance expectations in college often differ from those in high school, where students are typically required to attend class daily and attendance is closely monitored by administrators. At universities, instructors generally have greater flexibility in designing course policies, including whether attendance will factor into grades.

Classroom expectations have also evolved in recent years following the shift to remote and hybrid learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, many universities temporarily moved courses online, which introduced new levels of flexibility for students and instructors. Although most classes have since returned to in-person instruction, the experience of remote learning has continued to influence conversations about how strictly attendance should be enforced in traditional classrooms.

Michael said that policies focusing on student participation and coursework may be more effective than simply requiring students to be present, “When classes focus more on the quality of assignments and participation in discussions rather than just attendance, it creates a better learning environment.”

Students shared that the current system — in which professors determine their own attendance policies — can work as long as expectations are clearly outlined in course syllabi.

DeJana said the balance between flexible lecture policies and stricter expectations in smaller classes generally feels reasonable, “Attendance being optional in large lectures gives flexibility while also providing accountability.” She continued, “If you never show up your grade will suffer.”

Because attendance policies are typically determined by individual instructors, students often review course syllabi carefully at the start of each semester to understand expectations. As classroom formats continue to vary across departments and disciplines, attendance policies remain one of the ways professors shape how students engage with their courses.

Camden County officials on Thursday, March 5, 2026 celebrated the opening of a new reentry release center designed to help people leaving jail reconnect with housing, employment, and treatment resources as they transition back into the community.

The facility, located next to the current Camden County Correctional Facility in Camden City, will serve incarcerated people being released from custody after serving their term. County Commissioner Jonathan Young and Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. led the opening ceremony, with the center planned to be fully operational on March 16.

The program’s central goal is to reduce recidivism, the rate at which former inmates return to jail, by providing services to help overcome common barriers such as lack of identification, unstable housing, and limited access to substance use or mental health treatment. The center will offer a range of services aimed at giving individuals a concrete foundation upon reentry. Among the most critical is assistance obtaining government identification, including birth certificates and social security cards, documents that are often necessary for employment applications and access to treatment programs.

Rob Warner, the newest specialist at the reintegration facility and a current employee there, described the hands-on nature of the work his team does with each individual from the moment they arrive. “The facility plays a huge role in reintegrating individuals back into society from being previously incarcerated. We are the specialists who are working with these individuals from the time they enter until the time they leave. This happens because I work on getting them a birth certificate, social security, reintegration ID’s, huge stepping stones for treatment, and more,” Warner said. He noted the team consists of five members, most of whom are existing county employees who are continuing their work under the expanded program and improved facility.

The new facility includes practical amenities meant to help people prepare for life outside, such as showers, laundry machines, a kitchen, and common areas. Warner emphasized that even basic access to hygiene can carry significant meaning for someone about to reenter society.

“These are people just like you and me who not only need some help but want the help and are willing to accept the help. Helping people with substance use is also a great feeling to know that you got someone off the street who was struggling and are able to potentially help these families get back together because substance use can really take a toll on that,” Warner said.

A retired Camden County chief department officer, who previously worked in a similar capacity, said the problem the center is trying to solve is longstanding and well-documented.

“It’s generally known that many inmates who get incarcerated and released will return within some point of a year,” the former officer said. “This new facility will focus on reducing and returning inmates to be productive members of society once they serve their sentence.”

The retired official also pointed to the economic impact of a successful reentry facility. Fewer people cycling back through the jail system translates to lower costs for taxpayers and broader benefits for the communities of Camden County, they said.

Cappelli echoed that perspective, arguing that a significant portion of the jail population would be better served by the healthcare system than by incarceration. “Most of the folks who are incarcerated here really are folks who should be patients,” Cappelli expressed, adding that many require treatment for substance abuse and mental health conditions.

After the opening ceremony took place, the reentry release center became fully operational on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The Diocese of Camden, a catholic church located on Market street, reached a multi-million dollar settlement in February of this year amid sexual abuse allegations.

The abuse allegations came after the state of New Jersey changed the statute of limitations for sexual abuse allegations. In 2019 Governor Phil Murphy signed bill S477/A3648, which allows minors who were sexually abused to file civil suits up to their 55th birthday, which considerably extends the statute of limitations.

Following this change, survivors of abuse from the Diocese of Camden have filed civil suits despite now being well into adulthood.

Some of the survivors have spoken out with various news channels, one of which being Andrew Napoli who said to CBS news, “I’m going to end up dead if I don’t start addressing, you know, the trauma of my life.” Napoli also expressed in his statement that being a part of the committee that negotiated the $180 million dollar for the 300 survivors has contributed to the healing process.

The Diocese of Camden disclosed a clergy list to the public which lists 56 of the priests and deacons that were involved with the Diocese of Camden and were accused of sexual abuse and misconduct with minors.

Although the settlement wasn’t reached until early this year, the list was originally published in 2019, around the time that the allegations first came out. Most members on the list are now deceased, and those who are not have been removed from the ministry.

When asked if he thinks financial settlements are appropriate in these situations, or if jail time would be more suitable, Julien Moral a student at Rutgers Camden says, “I would say that for religious establishments, a monetary settlement isn’t justifiable. I think what the institution practices and preaches should be reflected in their actions. And so I would say jail time would be applicable for something like this. I think that if you are a safe haven for a lot of people, you should be held accountable and not be able to buy your way out of trouble.”

Senior Katie Moore will be graduating from Rutgers-Camden this year after a record-breaking tenure in the RUC tennis program. So far, Moore has amassed an overall career record of 69 wins, placing her firmly in second place behind alumni Amanda Hickman, who has 78 overall wins. Hickman set that record between 2012 and 2016.

When asked about her thoughts about the record, Moore had this to say, “It’s really motivating, honestly. I’ve played for almost all my life, so that competitive aspect is definitely kind of pushing in there. I really do want to win that record. I really am trying to get my coach to schedule matches.”

Speaking of coaches, head coach Lloyd Pearson was asked to share his thoughts regarding Moore making RUC tennis history, stating, “It’s a testament to her overall skills, commitment to her schoolwork that allows her to play, and a really good commitment and love for the sport.”

It is not just Moore who is making program history, as fellow co-captain and senior, Ashton Sirko, is also on the all-time wins list. She holds an overall win record of 48 wins, with a chance to become the sixth player in program history to achieve over 50 wins.

When prompted about their names being etched into history, Sirko stated, “When you’re kind of going through the motions and stuff like that, it doesn’t really hit you, but now, being a senior and graduating and kind of seeing everything really written down in our records, it’s pretty cool.”

Looking back at Moore’s career at RUC, there is one game that was mentioned as one of her best performances. Sirko reminisced about the game, stating, “I remember we had one playoff match, I think it was, not last year, but the season before that, against Kean. It was a complete shutout and our coach came up to us and said that was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in a Rutgers doubles women’s team history.” (Senior Ashton Sirko).

The head coach also shared, “Probably her best performance that I remember, singles and doubles at the same time, was when we played against Kean. She played a graduate student who was transferred from a Division I school. And Katie played a really complete match and beat that girl straight sets. That girl had a UTR [Universal Tennis Rating] rating that was way higher than Katie.” An Universal Tennis Rating is designed to properly rate players on a global scale.

They are both referring to a game from the 2023-24 season, on April 5th, when Moore and Sirko swept Kean’s duo, Grace Del Pino and Maria Torres, for an 8-0 win. Grace Del Pino was ranked higher than Moore, yet was bested during the Singles matchup in two games: 6-3 in game 1 and 6-1 in game 2.

Outside of tennis, Moore has been described as reliable and a leader by her team. Coach Pearson stated, “If I don’t know something that has to do with the campus, or if other kids are going to be late, I can always rely on Katie. Also, what makes her really reliable, she takes the time to scout upcoming opponents, and she remembers who’s coming back and who left and how that team was two years ago. She’s really reliable in a lot of aspects.”

As for Sirko, she said, “I think they definitely see her as a leader. I almost sometimes think of her as one of our other coaches. So she’s definitely a leader in that aspect, and I think everyone on the team can agree.”

For the team itself, they currently hold a 7-3 record. Regarding the team’s plan on finishing out the season, Moore had this to say, “I’m trying to stay as positive as I can about it. I’m really trying to push the girls. I’m more of a coach mentality. I want to see the younger ones succeed. I want to see them keep going, keep training, keep pushing.”

As for why she pushes so hard, she states, “Rocky Amidal, one of the best tennis players in the world, he says he always treated the next match as his last one. Because sometimes you never know. You could have that career-ending injury. So I just try and treat everyone as my last one.”

Moore has given her all during her tenure as a student-athlete at Rutgers-Camden. She will finish out the season with the team as they get ready to come back on March 29th.
