For the players on the Rutgers-Camden Women’s soccer team, sport injuries are a common occurrence. Recovery takes time and effort and a lot of aspects require an individual to focus on the physical and mental challenges in order to get back to their sport. Along with this, each injury has different time restraints depending on both the player and their source of being pulled from activity. Rehab is essential to recovery, and also requires patience to succeed.

Injuries can be extremely different for a player, both physically and mentally. After having conversations with athletes, a common emotion that comes up is frustration. These individuals have a hard time staying motivated and patient in their recovery. There are also issues with mental health becoming affected.

For example, Meghan Gorman. She is a freshman on the women’s program at Rutgers-Camden. When asked to talk about her experience as a hurt player, she mentioned, “I think athletes do change the way they approach the game after an injury to an extent. I believe the thought of the injury is a thought that never leaves the back of your mind so it definitely can mess with your performance if you let it.”

She also talked about the difference there is between being a player that can actively participate compared to an athlete currently unable to play. There are struggles that go beyond just physical, or even with mental health. Thoughts of lack of motivation and even feeling like a member of the team come into play.

Gorman talked about her transition from an active participation to a more support role and the mental challenges that come with this. She said, “I struggle with staying motivated and am trying to figure it out myself but what has helped me is being a part of the team as much as I can. Coming to every training, setting up drills, just being in close proximity to my teammates and coaches makes me still feel part of it. I get to see what I want to get back to and that motivates me.”

This being said, the players are not the only ones that notice the mental hardships that come with injuries. But also the trainers. These individuals work side by side with the athletes at Rutgers-Camden to help them both maintain and get back to peak health. This ensures that participants in the university athletics are able to compete to their best ability. Not to mention, since they work so closely with these athletes, they are also there to help them through the mental challenges of college athletics.

Ty Hagen, one of the athletic trainers at Rutgers-Camden shared an insight on how they go about treating their injured athletes. When asked if mental health plays a part in recovery he stated, “Yes injuries do affect athletes mental health. For a collegiate athlete sports are a part of their personal identity and any injury that holds them about their sport can lead to depression, anxiety and a lack of self.”

In short, there are a lot of mental aspects in sports that can go unnoticed. And a lot of the time injuries are seen as just physical. Both the players and trainers agreed that in their experience mental health plays a role in recovery. They also agreed that when these challenges are acknowledged, their support systems will be able to treat them with the right mentalities. As for now both Gorman and Hagen are advocating for more representation of mental health in sports.

The Rutgers-Camden baseball team is setting itself up to make history with a chance to secure its second NJAC championship.

Last season, in 2025, the Scarlet Raptors secured an award that has eluded them since they first merged into the New Jersey Atlantic Conference (NJAC) in the mid-1980s. That award is the NJAC championship.

Before the 2025 campaign, the closest thing that Rutgers-Camden has ever gotten to the NJAC championship was by winning the NJAC regular season in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons under former Head Coach Dennis Barth. Being crowned the NJAC regular season champs is given to the team with the best conference record in the regular season.

The 2025 Scarlet Raptors, under Head Coach Ryan Kulik, finished the season with a 30-17 record (25-15 in the regular season). During the NJAC Tournament, the Scarlet Raptors ripped through their competition to secure their first-ever Conference Championship.

Rutgers-Camden came out on top in a 4-0 sweep against the likes of Kean, Montclair State, Rowan, and The College of New Jersey. With this level of dominance, Rutgers-Camden secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament, where they would secure a win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in game two. However, game four against John Hopkins University and game five against RPI again did not go as planned, as Rutgers-Camden fell to both teams.

A bittersweet ending for a successful campaign as the team walks away with some hardware still. Now, the 2026 Scarlet Raptors are looking to run it back with their eyes on another Conference Championship trophy. At least, according to Austin Dubler, a junior on the team. When asked to share his thoughts on when he knew that they were going to be NJAC Champs, Dubler stated: “I think that’s the goal and the standard from the beginning of the season that when you come in, that’s what we’re shooting for.”

While every team has their goals to win the NJAC tournament, it is still no easy feat. One that Dubler knows very well, he was asked to share his thoughts on how the baseball team can come out on top against their conference opponents with which he commented, “I think it’s just showing up every day and bringing that energy that it’s going to be a tough game and it’s going to be a long day, but you still got to fight through it. You know, that’s what we work for. And the NJAC is a tough team [Conference], so we’re just ready for it, and we prepare for it.”

While the NJAC is difficult to win, let alone dominate, the 2026 Scarlet Raptors are currently holding a 6-1 record when facing opposing teams in their conference. Before their first loss, against Rowan, Dubler shared his thoughts on being repeat NJAC champs by stating, “Yeah, that’ll mean everything, we leave no doubt in the whole NJAC that we can do it again. That just wasn’t a one-time thing. And yeah, I mean, you know, we have a real shot, a real good shot. We put ourselves in a good spot starting off 6-0, so we just got to keep working and keep moving forward each day.”

The Scarlet Raptors are still on a hot run since defeating three of the remaining nine NJAC teams. The first three teams that Rutgers-Camden defeated, in doubleheaders, were William Paterson, TCNJ, and Rutgers-Newark. The rest of the teams consist of one more Rowan game, Ramapo College, Stockton, Montclair State, Kean, and New Jersey City University (NJCU).

If the Scarlet Raptors are able to come out on top, once again, by securing another NJAC championship. They might very well be the team to beat in the New Jersey Atlantic Conference.

Senior Katie Moore will be graduating from Rutgers-Camden this year after a record-breaking tenure in the RUC tennis program. So far, Moore has amassed an overall career record of 69 wins, placing her firmly in second place behind alumni Amanda Hickman, who has 78 overall wins. Hickman set that record between 2012 and 2016.

When asked about her thoughts about the record, Moore had this to say, “It’s really motivating, honestly. I’ve played for almost all my life, so that competitive aspect is definitely kind of pushing in there. I really do want to win that record. I really am trying to get my coach to schedule matches.”

Speaking of coaches, head coach Lloyd Pearson was asked to share his thoughts regarding Moore making RUC tennis history, stating, “It’s a testament to her overall skills, commitment to her schoolwork that allows her to play, and a really good commitment and love for the sport.”

It is not just Moore who is making program history, as fellow co-captain and senior, Ashton Sirko, is also on the all-time wins list. She holds an overall win record of 48 wins, with a chance to become the sixth player in program history to achieve over 50 wins.

When prompted about their names being etched into history, Sirko stated, “When you’re kind of going through the motions and stuff like that, it doesn’t really hit you, but now, being a senior and graduating and kind of seeing everything really written down in our records, it’s pretty cool.”

Looking back at Moore’s career at RUC, there is one game that was mentioned as one of her best performances. Sirko reminisced about the game, stating, “I remember we had one playoff match, I think it was, not last year, but the season before that, against Kean. It was a complete shutout and our coach came up to us and said that was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in a Rutgers doubles women’s team history.” (Senior Ashton Sirko).

The head coach also shared, “Probably her best performance that I remember, singles and doubles at the same time, was when we played against Kean. She played a graduate student who was transferred from a Division I school. And Katie played a really complete match and beat that girl straight sets. That girl had a UTR [Universal Tennis Rating] rating that was way higher than Katie.” An Universal Tennis Rating is designed to properly rate players on a global scale.

They are both referring to a game from the 2023-24 season, on April 5th, when Moore and Sirko swept Kean’s duo, Grace Del Pino and Maria Torres, for an 8-0 win. Grace Del Pino was ranked higher than Moore, yet was bested during the Singles matchup in two games: 6-3 in game 1 and 6-1 in game 2.

Outside of tennis, Moore has been described as reliable and a leader by her team. Coach Pearson stated, “If I don’t know something that has to do with the campus, or if other kids are going to be late, I can always rely on Katie. Also, what makes her really reliable, she takes the time to scout upcoming opponents, and she remembers who’s coming back and who left and how that team was two years ago. She’s really reliable in a lot of aspects.”

As for Sirko, she said, “I think they definitely see her as a leader. I almost sometimes think of her as one of our other coaches. So she’s definitely a leader in that aspect, and I think everyone on the team can agree.”

For the team itself, they currently hold a 7-3 record. Regarding the team’s plan on finishing out the season, Moore had this to say, “I’m trying to stay as positive as I can about it. I’m really trying to push the girls. I’m more of a coach mentality. I want to see the younger ones succeed. I want to see them keep going, keep training, keep pushing.”

As for why she pushes so hard, she states, “Rocky Amidal, one of the best tennis players in the world, he says he always treated the next match as his last one. Because sometimes you never know. You could have that career-ending injury. So I just try and treat everyone as my last one.”

Moore has given her all during her tenure as a student-athlete at Rutgers-Camden. She will finish out the season with the team as they get ready to come back on March 29th.

The Softball team has been hard at work during the offseason, looking to improve their skill set and chemistry for the upcoming 2026 season. The team is driven by one large goal: a tournament appearance.

Third Baseman, Alana Gannon, shared the team’s goals for this season: “Well, our goal is we’re trying to make it into the tournament.”

The team’s veteran pitcher, Sammie Friel, spoke on the team’s chances of accomplishing their goal: “I think this is a very promising team, and we’ve all been having a lot of fun together and getting along really well, so I like our chances for this year.”

During the 2024 season, the current roster reached its first NJAC tournament appearance, with 17 wins under its belt. The Scarlet Raptors were unable to secure a victory, falling to both Kean and Stockton University during the tournament.

After a successful year, the 2025 season looked promising as the team ramped up to return for a deep playoff run. However, luck was not on their side, as the team won only five games throughout the season.

Current Head Coach, Meredith McCarthy, regarding the drop in wins, stated, “Overall, I think mentally, we needed to get a lot tougher. And that’s something that we’ve made the top priority this season. I will say this group’s been great, and they’ve bought into everything that we’ve asked of them as a coaching staff. And we knew at the end of last season that we just needed to be a lot more mentally tough, myself included, you know, across the board.”

When asked about any foreseeable challenges that the team could face, pitcher Sammie Friel shared, “I think just making sure we all can execute. We’ve been working really hard in the offseason, so just making sure that we can continue to bring that out onto the field and working together more, especially since softball can be a very mental game.”

Aside from improving their mental fortitude, the Scarlet Raptors are addressing another part of their game. The Head Coach addressed the offensive end where she stated, “So we need to have productive at-bats and be productive outs when we’re outs and move runners and, you know, be selfless in how we’re going to produce runs this year.”

Gannon was also in agreement as she stated, “So, definitely hitting, we didn’t score enough runs last year. We’re working to be better at stringing our hits together. More productive at bats, I guess you could say, is the main thing.”

The Softball team has been hard at work this offseason, taking time to help each other improve. Gannon spoke on the team’s dynamic by sharing, “We’ve been challenged more in practice recently, and I do think that it’s paying off. As much as we all don’t like it, we do hit live a lot.”

A challenge that Gannon herself struggles with lies in hitting Screwballs. Screwballs, sometimes called a “reverse curve,” are a type of rare pitch where the ball moves away from an opposite-handed batter and towards an identical-handed batter. When asked about the reasoning for pitching screwballs, Friel stated, “You know, she’s a very talented hitter, so she challenges me as a pitcher in order to improve my pitches, and I help challenge her [Gannon] as a hitter to focus on some of the pitches that she wants to work on.”

The head coach shared a bit of her strategy for the year as she stated, “I think it’s really important that we get the splits, you know, we win one and give up one if we have to. But, you know, I think we’re realistic with the plan as far as like, we don’t need to beat everybody. Yeah, it would be nice. But like I said, it’s such a tough conference that we need to make sure that we’re prepared and ready for the ones that we need to beat.”

Due to weather, the softball team’s season opener, scheduled on February 22nd, was canceled. Pushing the season opener to March 5th instead, as they defend home field against Gwynedd Mercy University at Rutgers-Camden Community Park at 4 p.m. for their double header.

High school junior Ben Alexander is in the middle of figuring out where he wants to go to college, and Rutgers University Camden is one of the schools he is considering. He wants to play baseball and is still undecided on a major. As he goes through the recruiting process, he is looking at more than just athletics, thinking about academics, team culture, and where he will feel most comfortable.

Alexander said the recruiting experience has made him realize how important relationships are. While a program’s record and reputation matter, he said the people involved matter just as much. “The biggest thing for me is feeling comfortable with the coaches,” Alexander shared, explaining that the way coaches communicate and build relationships has stood out to him. Honest conversations have helped him picture what playing at the college level would actually feel like.

Talking with current players has also shaped his view of the program. “When I talked to the team, it felt welcoming and not forced,” Alexander said. One of his high school teammates has already committed to Rutgers University Camden, which gave him someone he trusts to talk to about the experience. Those conversations helped him understand the team environment and what day-to-day life looks like as a student athlete.

As he compares schools, Alexander said he keeps coming back to one thing, “I’m trying to find a place where I can see myself for four years.” He wants a school where he feels comfortable on the field and in the classroom. While sports are a big part of his decision, they are not the only factor. He is also looking at academic programs and what kind of campus environment each school offers.

His mother, Jamie Alexander, said she sees the process from a parent’s perspective. While she supports her son’s athletic goals, she said education comes first for their family: “At the end of the day, academics come first.” She explained that sports can help open doors, but the degree is what matters most in the long run. As they look at schools, she is paying attention to academic support services and how well each college supports its students. “We’re looking at the full picture, not just the sport,” she said.

Financial aid is also part of that picture. Jamie Alexander said the family is considering costs and scholarship opportunities as they compare options. Making sure the school is a good financial fit is an important part of the decision. “I want him somewhere he’ll feel supported, both on and off the field,” she said.

The recruiting process includes conversations with coaches, interactions with players, and sometimes campus visits. For Alexander, those experiences have helped him figure out what feels right and what does not. For now, he is still weighing his options. Rutgers University Camden is a strong possibility, but he has not made a final decision. As the process continues, Alexander said he is focused on finding a school that feels like home. For him and his family, the choice will come down to athletics, academics, financial considerations, and overall comfort.

Rutgers Camden men’s basketball team opened up their season 5 to 1. The team’s start featured key contributions from freshman guard and forward, Grady Etienne, whose first game of the season helped set the tone and build the team’s momentum.

The Scarlet Raptors found themselves down 15 going into the second half of the game against Alverina but Gardy’s 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block rallied the team, giving them a comeback to win the game and start the season 1 to 0.

“Everytime I step on the court I’m not always looking to score,” Etienne said. “I’m trying to make an impact whether that’s rebounding, defense, I’m just hustling.”

Rutgers–Camden has leaned on this energy to start off their season. Etienne explained the role the coaches wanted him to take on coming into the season: “Everytime I step on the court I’m not always looking to score, but to make an impact whether that’s rebounding, defense, I’m just hustling.” This role that he discusses was apparent during the game against Alverina where Etienne only took seven shots but had three rebounds on offense and then three on defense.

Even though for many freshmen coming into their first game would feel nervous and feel pressured to have to perform, Etienne expressed that he went into the game comfortable and felt the ability to play freely without any worries. He said that went put in while RUC was already down by fifteen points he didn’t feel pressure:

“I don’t know, I was just in the right spots and the adrenaline was just carrying me through. I was just locked in and focused,” Etienne shared. He also stated that following the game, “I just felt great because when I see all the hard work coming to the light, it’s just a great feeling.”

As Rutgers–Camden men’s basketball continues their season, Etienne’s breakout performance has given the Scarlet Raptors an additional spark as they build momentum.

The growing pressure on high school athletes to reach Division I has raised college recruiting expectations. Many athletes focus only on Division I programs. Coaches say some players overlook realistic and competitive options at Division III schools like Rutgers–Camden.

More high school athletes and their families are making college recruiting a main goal. Many spend time and money on club and travel teams year round, hoping it will lead to a Division I opportunity. A high school basketball coach and Rutgers Camden alumnus shared his experience with student athletes:

“As a high school coach, there are more kids who want to be recruited,” he stated.

Club and travel sports have made recruiting a bigger part of youth sports. Athletes are exposed to higher competition at younger ages. This exposure can help some players, but it can also raise expectations. Division I programs make up only a small number of NCAA athletes.

At Rutgers Camden athletics are part of campus life, building school spirit and bringing students to the university. Division III programs allow athletes to keep playing while focusing on academics. The coach shared that many families do not understand how hard it is to play sports at any NCAA level. Division III athletics are very competitive and require commitment.

“Parents and kids need to keep the goal attainable. Playing for a Division III school like Rutgers Camden is a huge win,” the coach said. “It is competitive. It is a grind.”

Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships. Because of this, academics and campus life matter more. For some athletes, this works better than Division I because they can focus on their education. They have the option to live on campus or close by with family. There are flexible options to make being a college athlete possible.

Rutgers Camden is a realistic option for athletes who want to compete in the NCAA but may not fit Division I programs. The coach said Rutgers Camden recruits players with strong high school and club experience.

“As a coach, I like to manage expectations and help kids make informed decisions,” he added.

High school coaches help athletes communicate with colleges and with game film, campus visits, and academic requirements. In Division III recruiting, athletes often need to show interest first. Rutgers Camden’s location and academics make it a good option for many students.

The Rutgers Camden men’s golf team held a fundraising event at Villari’s Lakeside Restaurant in Sicklerville, New Jersey on January 29th, raising $1,500 for the program. The money raised at the event will be used for equipment and travel costs, including overnight stays for two-day tournaments.

As students and staff at Rutgers are making their way through the first half of the 2026 spring semester, the men’s golf team is beginning to prepare for its spring season. Coach Bob Cardea, the longest-tenured coach currently at Rutgers Camden, posted flyers for the team’s January 29th fundraiser, primarily inviting former players and family members of current players.

Andrew Slattery, who earned all-conference honors in the Fall 2025 season, was happy with the result and turnout of the event, noting, “It was a success because we raised about $1,500 and had a good outcome of people.”

When asked further about how the team is preparing for competitive play, Slattery noted that the team is using indoor golf simulators. This choice of indoor simulators isn’t to avoid challenging weather; it’s primarily because most local golf courses and driving ranges are closed for play due to the heavy snowfall the area recently received. Many local facilities are closed, such as Slattery’s home course, Pennsauken Country Club, the team’s home course, Rancocas Golf Club, and the local Camden County Golf Academy driving range.

Slattery talked further about how he practices through the poor weather, “It’s tough with the snow to get out and play on the course, but I’ve been hitting the [simulator] to stay loose and make sure I’m hitting the ball how I want to.” Many local golf facilities in Camden County offer indoor simulators, such as his home course, which he described as an ideal way to keep training regardless of the weather and continue their offseason preparation when outdoor practice is limited.

He also shared his thoughts on the outlook of the team’s potential for success, noting that he is confident because every player from the fall roster is returning for the spring season, a first during his time at Rutgers:

“I am confident in our ability to be good and potentially win conferences because we have everyone coming back from the fall semester, and we had a solid team,” he noted. “We all have the ability to play really well, but we all just have to go out and actually do it.” His confidence comes from the team’s first place finish in the fall season at the RU-Camden Scarlet Raptor Fall Invitational.

The Scarlet Raptors’ offseason preparation will be put to the test on March 22nd, as they start off their season at the two-day Dickinson Spring Invitational at Carlisle Barracks Golf Club. The next home tournament the team will host is the RU-Camden Scarlet Raptor Spring Invitational on April 13th. These tournaments offer the team more experience together, which they hope will allow them to perform well at the United East tournament on April 24th and 25th to secure placements for a national tournament slot.

Athletes at Rutgers University in Camden can spend anywhere between eight to twenty hours a week on athletics depending on their season. Even in the off-season these teams come together for practices, conditioning, and team meetings. In season, these time commitments can include travel and competitions, only adding to the time spent together. Both in and out of season, student athletes require mental, physical and even academic demands.

According to a recent study at the Liberal Arts and Sciences department of the University of Illinois, “Research suggests that students should spend approximately two to three hours, per credit hour, studying in order to be successful in their courses.” They also mentioned that additional studying was important for STEM classes.

Meanwhile, student athletes are still expected to balance their academics, work, and personal lives, leaving little downtime to engage in other extracurriculars or hobbies. Many athletes even express that there are pressures of being a student athlete that can be difficult to notice through an outside point of view.

Caitlyn Ortiz, a sophomore on the Rutgers–Camden women’s soccer team, explained that she struggles to perform both on and off the field which causes stressful emotions. She also stated that there are truly no real days off when a part of a collegiate sport.

Rutgers-Camden women’s soccer team is currently in their spring off-season. While their primary competition window is in the fall, this team is using the winter and spring months to get in extra work off the field. Their schedule includes weekly practices Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with hours adding to around eight hours dedicated to mostly conditioning in preparation for their preseason this upcoming summer.

Caitlyn Ortiz shared her experience trying to juggle being a student athlete with social connections, “The off-season I spent hours practicing and trying to make time to do things with family and friends can be hard…”. And when she was asked what some of the biggest challenges she faced as an athlete, she expressed, “We have to worry about performing on the field, but we also have to worry about performing in the classroom…”

In contrast, RUC’s baseball team is starting to focus on their upcoming games. The team won the NJAC tournament in 2025 and are currently top contenders for the title this year. In their preseason, their preparation includes practices Monday through Saturday, with hours reaching over 20 per week. A baseball game lasts several hours, and it is also common for Rutgers Camden’s baseball team to have double headers, which are competition days with multiple games.

Brice Bradley, a junior baseball player at Rutgers–Camden, expressed, “One of my biggest concerns would probably be missing class. Our travel days take up a lot of time, and while the absences are excused you miss some of the material.” He also added, “Keeping in contact with the professors is probably the biggest key, and for the most part they’re really great with being understanding and supportive”.

Although the requirements and schedules are different depending on the season, the students and staff at Rutgers Camden University help to ensure the success of the athletics programs. Student athletes participation in their sports demands skills in time management at all times of the year.

During the 2025-26 season, Rutgers-Camden’s Head Coach, James Boney, reflects on his potential first winning record as the Women’s Basketball head coach. The chance to finish off the season with a 13-12 overall record, the third-best record in program history, last seen in the 2011-12 season.

Coach Boney entered the season with a winner’s mindset as he was on the cusp of making Rutgers history by tying the record of most wins in a single season in Women’s Basketball, with fifteen. A record that was accomplished in both the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons.

When asked about the potential record-tying achievement, the fourth-year head coach had this to say, “I’m a in the moment kind of coach. I always tell my kids, ‘Whatever game is the next game or tonight’s game, that’s the biggest game, and then once that game is over, it’s just another game.’”

Evidently, his mentality was shown throughout the season when the Scarlet Raptors held two out of three winning records in the past three months. They held a 4-3 record in November, a 2-2 record in December, and a 5-4 record in January. Adding up to an 11-9 overall record with five games left in the season.

However, February has not been fortunate enough to warrant a program tying record as the team dropped to a 1-3 record so far. The team now holds a 12-12 overall record as they look to win one last game of the season.

Compared to Coach Boney’s first three seasons, he has found more success this season. His wins since becoming Head Coach started from four wins in his first season, to one win in his second season, to nine wins in his third season, and now twelve wins as of this season.

Now, while the record itself is not something that he dwells on. The record is proof of his commitment to winning every game of the season with his players. When asked about his newfound success this season as compared to before he shared, “My goal when I got here is to build a successful program, and we talk in business terms, not just pro. Build a successful business. So nothing has changed from what I’ve done.”

Looking back on his coaching career, how exactly did he get to that point? Coach Boney credits many people for his initial success. Starting with giving his parents crucial respect and admiration for who he is today.

On the other hand, according to Coach Boney, approximately 40% of his coaching style he attributes to coaches he has worked alongside and against during his tenure at Kean, St. Peter’s, and Cumberland County College. Naming specifically Former Head Coaches Michele Sharp, Mike Tomlin, and Pat Summitt, to current Head Coaches Marc Mitchell and Dawn Staley.

For the rest of the percentages, Coach Boney says, “If we could break it down in percentage, I’m probably 60% Jamie Hoffman.” Coach Boney credits the majority of his coaching ability and successful program-building skills to former Head Coach Jaime Hoffman at his alma mater, Montclair State.

Coach Boney skillset will be put to the test as the team competes to qualify for the upcoming 2025-26 NJAC tournament. A final win over NJCU, on February 18th, will push the roster to a 13-12 overall record and a 10-8 conference record. That kind of record could give the Scarlet Raptors legitimacy as a contender in the NJAC tournament.
