A new AI data center under construction in Vineland is causing controversy across South Jersey. The project began construction last year and many community members have expressed concern about the environment and its impact on their lives.

This AI data center campus was developed by DataOne and backed by Amsterdam-based Nebius Group in Vineland, New Jersey. This is a $17.4 billion, five-year deal to provide dedicated computing power to Microsoft. The project is a 2.4 million-square feet facility, designed to reach 300 megawatts of electricity, serving AI, cloud computing, and Microsoft, using gas-fired power. Important to note that 300 megawatts is nearly double the current power usage of the entire city of Vineland.

In June of 2025, New Jersey legislature passed a bill requiring data centers to report energy and water use to the Board of Public Utilities each quarter, but the bill was vetoed in October by Governor Murphy. There are currently around eighty other data centers in the state.

Approval of the data center in Vineland has caused immense amounts of friction among local residents over the environmental “cost” of the AI boom. On January 21, 2026, a heated town hall at the Landis Theater took place, where residents expressed their concerns over what an AI plant means for the environment.

DataOne CEO Charles-Antoine Beyney told the audience that the facility would operate differently from traditional data centers. Beyney told the crowd that data centers, “…consume water, they pollute, they are extremely not efficient. This is clearly not what we are building here.” He eased some concerns, however, initial reports state that the facility could require 1.1 million gallons of water annually for cooling.

Another concern has been that this data plant will disrupt residential neighborhoods, seeing as there will be a constant hum due to the cooling fans required to keep the thousands of GPUs from melting.

For Rutgers–Camden students, the data center will inevitably create a number of construction jobs, and may have a long-term impact on tech employment for graduates in the South Jersey region. Students who study environmental sciences, can consider the Vineland site a living lab. The facility uses “behind-the-meter” gas generators and air-cooling as opposed to water-intensive liquid cooling. This would offer a specific field for students studying sustainable technology.

To keep up with developments surrounding the data center, information can be found through the Vineland city council and Vineland town hall meetings as well as press releases from Nebius.

With the cost of both on-campus and off-campus living steadily increasing in the Philadelphia/ South Jersey region, students are being forced to make difficult trade-offs that directly affect their college experience.

The perspective of Lauren Rich, a student residing at 330 Cooper Street, one of the university’s newer on-campus housing options, highlights the core dilemma; choosing convenience over cost-efficiency often leads to deep financial stress.

“High housing costs and the stress of making sure rent /fees are paid definitely raise my anxiety,” Rich stated. “Even though 330 Cooper is convenient, the price feels high for what we get, and worrying about affordability adds to overall stress, especially during busy academic weeks.”

Rich raises a major challenge that while on-campus living at Rutgers-Camden offers valuable amenities like security, proximity to classes and complimentary laundry, the per-semester rates place a heavy burden on students already managing tuition and fees.

The student acknowledges that although their choice of on-campus housing, while financially stressful, provides the benefit of convenience. Being close to class and campus events directly supports academic engagement. However, the compromise is visible in their description of the living conditions: “Yes, Cooper can get loud at times especially being right next to that main road and sharing spaces makes it harder to focus.”

This suggests that even for a relatively high price, the quality of the academic environment is compromised by external factors such as traffic noise. The alternative would be living off-campus, however that is not necessarily cheaper, but involves different trade-offs. The high cost of housing, whether on or off campus, is a significant contributor to the mental health crisis among college students.

The housing crisis forces students to consider not just their present college years, but their entire future in the region. Lauren Rich expressed a clear sense of hesitancy about establishing roots locally after graduation. “It makes me hesitant. Seeing how expensive rent is in the area makes me reconsider staying local after graduating because affordability feels uncertain.” This viewpoint is particularly concerning for South Jersey and Philadelphia, which rely on local universities to feed into their regional economies.

Despite the widespread financial strain, the student body is aware of the campus resources designed to combat basic needs insecurity, “Yes, I know about the campus food pantry, emergency funds, and the Dean of Students office offering help. I haven’t personally used them, but I know other students who have relied on those resources.” The existence and utilization of these resources emphasize the importance of the issue of financial stability at a fundamental level.

A direct solution to this presented by the student was, “Lower housing costs or create more affordable on-campus options. Even small fee reductions or more transparency about where housing money goes would make a big difference.” This highlights a desire for transparency and proactive affordability measures from the university administration, suggesting that small adjustments could significantly reduce student anxiety and improve the overall academic experience.

Students on the Rutgers-Camden campus have felt high levels of frustration and stress over the government shutdown. For students and their families, the political standstill in Washington was not just a news story, but a direct threat to their finances, studies, and future stability.

In an interview, a sophomore student captured the mood with a mix of “frustration and anger,” noting the unfairness to federal workers “forced to find other ways to sustain themselves,” despite having secured government jobs. This frustration is tied to how the local impact of the Philadelphia-Camden metro area is home to an estimated 33,000 to 56,000 federal employees.

The student’s concern about federal employees being forced to find secondary work is entirely valid. When the government closes, thousands of local employees lose their paychecks, yet the cost of living does not take breaks. Essential staff at critical hubs like the Philadelphia International Airport, including TSA officers and air traffic controllers, are designated “excepted” and are required to work without pay. This situation not only creates immense personal strain for those employees but leads to the kind of operational disruptions the student noted.

As this student observed, “Some people just don’t work. They don’t go where they usually go, which slows everything down, and lines get longer, and people have to wait longer. We are seeing that a lot with the airports.”

This reduced activity goes beyond security lines. Local restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses in Camden and Philadelphia that rely on the daily spending of federal employees. Local companies that depend on federal contracts face frozen payments and delayed funding, creating a ripple effect of financial instability across South Jersey’s corporate landscape.

For Rutgers-Camden students, the anxiety quickly translates into worries about their education and academic progress. The student expressed immediate concern that the shutdown might, “affect how much money I would get from financial aid, which, in the long term, might up my loans and all the other stuff I didn’t think I would have to worry about.” While core functions like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) processing and the disbursement of Pell Grants and federal student loans generally continue, the student’s worry is well-rounded.

The Department of Education typically furloughs around 87% of its workforce during a shutdown. This staffing reduction means that while the automated systems keep running, any complicated issues will face significant delays. Additionally, The Office of Federal Student Aid closes customer service centers staffed by DOE employees, making it harder for students to resolve crucial financial issues.

Perhaps the most lasting consequence of the shutdown noted by the student is the damage to public trust in government. When asked about the long-term consequences of, the student simply replied, “I think it’s trust because who knows when it might happen again?”

As the political halt continues in Washington, students at Rutgers-Camden are left to manage the very real financial and emotional costs of a government shutdown.

When the lights go up on Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, audiences expect a classic tale of unrequited love and existential despair. For the Rutgers-Camden theater company, this production is a conscious modern twist on the 1896 masterpiece, running from October 30th to November 9th, 2025.

Beyond the expected analysis, Director Damon Bonetti and Stage Manager Caden Adams reveal the efforts to manage time, build morale, and execution of a set design that literally extends the drama into the audience.

The first strategic move for this production was to emphasize the play’s emotional core. Bonetti insists that while the play seems “about art,” it is about selfishness and human desire, “There’s no heroes in this play… everyone’s got a problem, just like we do.” Director Bonetti notes that every character is drawn with a complexity that reflects life. These complexities can reflect how life is sometimes kind, sometimes cruel, and always flawed.

The design team anchored the production in a familiar era. Adams reveals the deliberate aesthetic choice of making it a more modern take on the play. “The time period is set in like the ‘90s, ‘80s sets… And the music that plays throughout is a band called Depeche Mode… It’s something that takes something very old and makes it quite modern and accessible to everybody.” This twist makes the timeless themes of generational conflict and ambition resonate strongly with younger audiences, including the high school students the program invites to see the show.

In the final, grueling weeks leading up to the production, the real work is often the invisible management. Both leaders prioritize morale and time management. The director’s primary technique is respecting students’ time, especially during the stressful finals season. “I always want to make sure that I’m using their time wisely,” Bonetti says. By being considerate of their schedule, he finds that the cast gives their best when they are called to rehearse.

Complementing this efficiency is a focus on community and encouragement, led by the stage manager. Adams views their role as a form of support. “It can be very easy as an artist and as a creative to beat yourself up,” Adams explains. “I think it’s very important for someone in my position to be that person for them that encourages them and keeps their head up.” He strives to build a working relationship that fosters a strong community.

While director Bonetti worried about coordinating the projections with the set made of wooden pallets, Adams revealed a more ambitious plan that would define the audience experience, “There’s literally an extension of the stage that’s built out over the first three rows of the audience,” Adams notes. This will make this a very immersive experience for the audience.

What happens behind the curtains during a quick scenery change? According to Adams, the atmosphere is a mix of stress and goofiness. “For as seriously good as these actors are, they are literally the biggest goofballs I’ve ever met,” he recounts. Backstage is a melting pot of serious art forms produced by funny students.

Beyond ticket revenue, the production’s success is measured by its impact on its participants and the reputation of the theater program. For the students, the most important non-academic skill is the human connection. Bonetti states, “The hope is that the friendships that they make on this show can last decades.”

Rutgers-Camden students are eligible for two free tickets. Check the official box office for showtimes.

The Rutgers Academic Integrity Policy is the basis of the University’s commitment to striving for an ethical environment. This policy is enforced in all schools at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, which includes Rutgers-Camden. The purpose of this policy is to define what exactly are the violations, penalties, and also how to process any violations. It is expected that all students, faculty, and staff read and understand this policy.

Academic Integrity is at the forefront of the priority list in order for the University to achieve its educational, clinical, and research missions.

The principles of academic integrity require that a student:

Submits all work in a course, academic research, or other activity is the students original work and was not aided by impermissible technologies, materials, or collaborations

Properly acknowledges and cites all use of images, ideas, or results of others

Ethically obtains all data and reports the accurately

Treats all other students ethically and to respect their goals without interference

Uphold the ethical standards and code of conduct for their field

Students need to ensure that they uphold these principles and make sure that proper credit is given. This maintains the university’s integrity, and faculty members are encouraged to send a link to the policy on their syllabi. However, faculty members are facing a difficult situation proving when this line is crossed.

Dr. Kathryn M. Lambert, a professor of Political Science at Rutgers-Camden, points out the gap in the university’s enforcement tools. Dr. Lambert says, “I read papers that I suspect are created with AI but I have no empirical evidence to present to the student to initiate a discussion about it.” This has presented a huge ethical concern for not only Dr. Lambert, but for many professors across campus.

The Academic Integrity policy is generally viewed as standard and Dr. Lamber notes that nothing about the policy seems “unreasonable or out of the ordinary.” This differs from other institutions that are now negotiating where AI can be included into academic spaces.

For Dr. Lambert, the core ethical conflict lies in students using AI to replace their authenticity when writing their papers. To her, using AI is alright when using it as a tool to create outlines for papers. However, using AI can become incriminating if used to write the actual paper. “If students rely on AI to generate the paper then critical thinking skills and research skills may suffer,” says Dr. Lambert.

The Rutgers AI policy outlines several types of academic integrity violations, each with examples. Any violation is a breach of ethics and trust. Some of the most common types of violations:

Cheating: Cheating is the use of prohibited material, information, sources or aids in any academic exercise. Cheating can also mean submitting an assignment as one’s own work when someone else prepared them.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of another person’s work without giving them proper credit. Every quote or appropriate indentation must be identified by the student, in order to avoid plagiarism.

Fabrication: Fabrication is the use of falsified sources, citations, data, or results. This could look like citing a source that does not exist.

Some less common violations include:

Facilitation of Dishonesty

Academic Sabotage

Violation of Research or Professional Ethics

Violations Involving Potentially Criminal Activity

There are three levels of violations: Level 1 Violations are less serious violations of the policy. May occur on a minor quiz or assignment, and the student may be inexperienced to lack the understanding of the policy. Some examples of this would be plagiarism on a minor assignment, citing a source that does not exist, prohibited collaboration with another student on a homework assignment. Level 2 violations are serious violations of academic integrity that affect a greater portion of the course work. Level 2 violations are seen as planned and clearly dishonest. Some examples of Level 2 violations are a second violation, substantial plagiarism, participating in an organized cheating scheme. Level 3 Violations are considered extremely serious breaches of conduct, which may include violation of law, extreme cases of dishonesty, and violation of professional code of conduct.

The school’s ethical concerns are recognized by students attending Rutgers-Camden. When asked if AI could be used as a tool, a student answered, “Yes, as a student I use AI quite frequently to help me understand class material. I often create test questions related to the topic of study.” This would be considered permissible to most students and faculty members and not a breach of the policy. This student makes the point that although students should adhere to the Academic Integrity Policy, “students may want to pass without having the time to study, so they risk breaking the rules for a slight advantage.” This goes against the academic integrity policy, which this student is aware of, but they acknowledge that every student’s circumstances differ.

Ultimately, the Rutgers Academic Integrity Policy is not just a set of rules, but a policy that preserves the University’s success. While professors may face difficulties enforcing the policy against AI use, students also try navigating the ethics of using these AI tools. As Rutgers continues to expand this policy and enforce these methods, it remains critical that students understand the importance of the Academic Integrity Policy.

College students nationwide are facing increasing financial pressure from textbook expenses, which continue to rise alongside tuition fees. Both students and faculty members have suggested that universities should consider covering textbook costs.

Proponents argue that university-covered textbooks would relieve students from spending hundreds or thousands of dollars annually on required course materials. Faculty members have also expressed concerns about textbook pricing, with some professors avoiding textbook assignments due to their high costs and anticipated student reactions.

The textbook affordability issue affects students across all majors and academic years, regardless of whether they receive financial aid for tuition.

According to the Education Data Initiative, college textbook prices have increased by 1,041% since 1977, with further increases projected. The textbook industry, dominated by three major companies—McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Cengage—has become a billion-dollar business.

Students have developed various strategies to manage textbook expenses, including:

Borrowing from libraries

Sharing with classmates

Purchasing used copies

Despite these options, a survey by PASCAL found that 39% of respondents reported taking fewer classes during some semesters due to textbook costs. The survey suggests that more affordable textbooks might enable students to take fuller course loads each term.

Some students resort to downloading textbooks from unauthorized online sources, an illegal practice commonly known as piracy. While technically theft, the ethics of textbook piracy remain a subject of debate among students facing financial constraints.

Rising inflation has intensified affordability concerns. Advocates suggest that if universities absorbed textbook expenses or if textbook costs were reduced, students might experience less financial stress and potentially perform better academically with full access to required materials.
