Each March brings honor and reflection to women’s past achievements, contributions, and struggles in human history. At Rutgers University–Camden, this month is significant since the institution has long upheld gender equality and women’s leadership initiatives.

Originally, Women’s History Month was a local celebration started in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978. Congress accepted the movement at a national level when it declared March as Women’s History Month in 1987. Educational institutions such as Rutgers–Camden have greatly influenced creating awareness of women’s achievements since then.

Rutgers–Camden has a history of long-standing efforts at gender equity with academic programs, organizations, and events aimed at empowering women. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program offers interdisciplinary courses through which students may explore women’s roles in society. Additionally, programs like the Office of Diversity and Inclusion host workshops, speaker series, and mentorship initiatives that encapsulate the female voice in the fight for social change.

Rutgers–Camden holds events honoring women in the community during Women’s History Month. Participants have included women from diverse industries in panel discussions sharing their insights into leadership and advocacy. Art exhibits showcased pieces from women artists whose works speak about empowerment and social justice. Workshops have discussed various approaches to self-care, mental well-being, and professional development specifically catered to women. Volunteer community service projects also assist women in need.

Rutgers–Camden is home to inspiring women who have made significant impacts in academics, politics, science, and the arts. Women’s History Month is evolving at Rutgers University–Camden as a venue for education, reflection, and empowerment. With celebrations based on women’s accomplishments and nurturing inclusive dialogue, the campus community strengthens its commitment to social progress and gender equality.

In January 2025, Rutgers University–Camden found itself grappling with significant challenges brought on by executive orders from President Donald Trump that targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These directives, similar to those affecting other institutions across the country, required the suspension of certain DEI-related programs in institutions that received federal funding. As a result, Rutgers–Camden was forced to reevaluate and, in some cases, cancel events and programs tied to DEI efforts.

Rutgers–Camden has been a strong advocate for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in various aspects of university life. The Division of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE) has played a central role in integrating DEI values into the university’s policies and practices.

However, with the executive orders of January 2025, federal funding for DEI initiatives was put on hold, leading to the cancellation of a conference at Rutgers–Camden intended for students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This event was scrapped after funding connected to DEI was frozen.

Rutgers–Camden is not the only institution affected by these developments. Following the executive orders, colleges and universities across the nation have been reevaluating their DEI programs. In response, some schools have taken steps to comply with the new directives by altering the names of their offices and initiatives. For example, Northeastern University rebranded its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to “Belonging in Northeastern,” shifting its focus to a broader sense of community and inclusion.

In light of these changes, Rutgers–Camden has canceled certain DEI-related events and is rethinking other initiatives. Despite these challenges, the university remains committed to its core principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The administration is actively exploring alternative approaches to continue supporting diverse communities while remaining in compliance with federal policies.

The situation at Rutgers–Camden underscores the tension between federal directives and the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity. As it navigates these complex issues, Rutgers–Camden is dedicated to maintaining an inclusive environment for all of its students, faculty, and staff.

Rutgers University-Camden is putting a fresh emphasis on student wellbeing as the demands of
academic life increase. To assist the physical, emotional, and mental health of its student body,
the university offers a wide range of programs. The institution has created a holistic approach to
well-being, recognizing that a college education involves more than simply academics and
enabling students to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom.
The Rutgers University-Camden College Wellness Center, a kind and approachable center for
student health, is at the center of our endeavor. The center’s goal is very clear: to offer
comprehensive treatment that attends to students’ emotional and psychological needs in
addition to their urgent physical demands. The institution provides everything from standard
medical treatment, such as examinations, testing, and immunizations, to specialist mental
health assistance, all under the direction of a committed team of healthcare experts. Counseling
services are available to students for issues including anxiety, addiction, and learning
impairments, among others.
Rutgers-Camden provides medical and mental health services, but it also attends to
fundamental necessities that may have an impact on the wellbeing of its students. Students who
may be experiencing food poverty can get wholesome meals for free from the center’s food
pantry. The university is dedicated to creating a campus where students can concentrate on
their academics without having to worry about where their next meal is coming from, and this
program is part of that effort.
The Wellness Center provides a wide range of mental health services, including stress
management seminars, mental health courses, and individual and group therapy. A peer
support program’s realization enables students to interact informally with trained others,
fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding. The center stated that peer support is
essential since students frequently feel better at ease talking about their difficulties with
someone who has experienced similar things.
Rutgers-Camden is seeing a cultural shift on campus as student mental health becomes a more
pressing concern in this day and age. Nowadays, students are deliberately pushed to put their
mental health first and are more forthcoming about asking for assistance. Programs like
“Wellness Wednesdays,” which provide students access to mindfulness exercises, yoga, art
therapy, and other activities that encourage self-care and relaxation, provide a respite from the
demands of the classroom. These courses are intended to assist students in stress
management and upholding a good work-life balance, which may be especially difficult during
finals and midterm exams.
In addition to offering services via the Wellness Center, Rutgers-Camden is dedicated to
maintaining a secure campus environment. The Rutgers University Police Department maintains

a good safety record by patrolling the campus and the neighboring communities around the
clock. Students may focus on their academics without the extra stress of worrying about their
safety because of this emphasis on security, which provides them with peace of mind.
It’s evident that Rutgers University-Camden is setting the standard for promoting student health
as it keeps growing its wellness initiatives. The College Wellness Center is still at the center of
these initiatives, providing a range of services that promote long-term health in addition to
addressing urgent health issues. Rutgers-Camden aims to empower students to succeed in all
facets of their lives by providing comprehensive treatment that addresses physical, mental, and
social health.
This broad approach to wellness reflects a growing understanding that maintaining balance,
mental health, and personal fulfillment throughout one’s college career are just as important
indicators of a student’s success as academic performance.

Originating in ancient Greece, the Olympic Games have grown to become one of the most important worldwide events in history. They stand as a tribute to human endurance, culture, and growth. Over time, the Olympics have evolved from modest beginnings to modern celebration, mirroring changes in culture, technology, and societal ideals. With its unique emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and gender equality, the 2024 Paris Games serve as a shining image of how the Olympics have changed over time.

The first Olympics took place in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC as a part of a celebration honoring Zeus, the ruler of the gods. Only male competitors competed in a variety of sports during these early games, including sprinting, wrestling, and chariot racing. These were intensely spiritual occasions that symbolized harmony and peace among Greece’s city-states, in addition to being athletic competitions. The Olympic victory was considered one of the greatest achievements. The ancient Olympics flourished for over twelve centuries until Theodosius I, the Roman Emperor, outlawed them in 393 CE as part of his campaign to establish Christianity throughout the empire.

The Olympics were inactive until Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, brought them back in the late 19th century. His goal was to provide a venue where individuals from all over the world could compete for the sake of world peace and goodwill. In 1896, 14 nations and 241 athletes competed in the inaugural modern Olympic Games held in Athens. As a result of the increasing range of sports and participants, the Olympics have grown over time to include the Winter Games (1924), the Paralympics (1960–1961), and the Youth Olympic Games (2010).

When the Olympics made its modest comeback in the modern era, millions of spectators and athletes throughout the world were drawn to it. The evolution of the Games in the 20th and

21st centuries has addressed a range of wider social and political themes, including nationalism, gender, and racism. Though gender equality in events took decades to accomplish, the introduction of additional women’s activities starting in 1900 was a big step forward. The size and celebration of the Olympics increased along with technology. One way to transform the Games into a common cultural experience was to introduce live broadcasts in 1936, which brought the Games into living rooms worldwide.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, emphasized environmental sustainability by using renewable energy and materials. Athletes and officials were transported in hydrogen-powered cars, and the medals were made from recycled electronics. The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are expected to continue this focus on sustainability and gender equality.

1. Prioritizing sustainability: Paris 2024 has been hailed as “the most sustainable Games ever.” In keeping with international efforts to tackle climate change, the organizing committee has pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 50% from the previous Olympics. Locations across the city have been selected to cut down on travel times and emissions associated with transportation. A lot of the temporary buildings constructed for the Games are also intended to be destroyed or reused after the event, adding to their long-lasting legacy.

2. Gender Equality Achieved: With an equal number of male and female competitors, the 2024 Paris Games will also mark the first-ever Olympic gender parity. Although women have participated in the Games for over a century, complete parity in terms of the number of events and athletes has not yet been attained. This achievement demonstrates the Olympic movement’s dedication to dismantling obstacles as well as a larger cultural trend toward gender equality in sports and other domains.

3. Innovation in Sport: To improve the experience for both athletes and spectators, Paris 2024 is also embracing technological innovation. Advanced solutions will be integrated. The Games are pushing the boundaries of what is conceivable in sports, from cutting-edge broadcast technology providing immersive viewing experiences to AI-driven analytics assisting athlete preparation.

The Olympics have evolved to reflect larger social shifts. The modern Games go beyond athletic competition, focusing on questioning conventional wisdom, diversity, and global concerns like equality and sustainability. The 2024 Paris Games emphasize gender equality and environmental sustainability, representing a new era for the worldwide movement. Even though they are always changing, the Olympics are nevertheless a potent symbol of our shared hopes for a brighter future and a force for unifying the world.

By: Naely Fajardo & Collaboration with NSVRC

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) holds a critical place in the annual calendar of college campuses, serving as a rallying point for survivors, advocates, and allies to confront and combat sexual violence. This year’s theme, “Building Connected Communities,” underscores the importance of collective action in creating environments free from sexual violence. In collaboration with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), colleges and universities have access to invaluable support and resources tailored to their unique needs and challenges.

Within the intricate tapestry of campus life, the prevalence of sexual assault highlights the urgent need for proactive measures. From faculty and staff to students and administrators, every member of the campus community plays a vital role in shaping attitudes, policies, and responses to sexual violence. SAAM serves as a catalyst for dialogue, education, and advocacy, encouraging colleges to initiate conversations, implement effective policies, and provide essential support services for survivors.

Dates to look out for for next year (dates subject to change):

SAAM Day of Action (April 2nd)

The SAAM Day of Action takes place on the first Tuesday of every April, and is the opportunity to show your support with your peers and larger community. Put on your teal shirt and show us how you’re commemorating this year’s SAAM Day of Action!

Denim Day (April 24th)

Denim Day was a campaign started as a result of an Italian Supreme Court Case in which a survivor wasn’t believed due to the tightness of her jeans. The campaign website states, “Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

Education and training lie at the forefront of prevention efforts, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to instances of sexual violence. Comprehensive programs encompassing consent, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and survivor support are essential components of campus initiatives. Additionally, the provision of confidential and accessible support services, including counseling, medical assistance, and legal advocacy, is paramount in ensuring survivors feel supported and empowered.

Policy reform is another crucial aspect of addressing sexual violence on college campuses. By reviewing and strengthening campus policies and procedures related to sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault, institutions can establish clear reporting mechanisms and consequences for perpetrators. Prevention campaigns, community engagement initiatives, and advocacy efforts further reinforce the commitment to creating a culture of respect, consent, and accountability.

Through continuous evaluation and adaptation, colleges can gauge the effectiveness of their prevention strategies, support services, and policies, ensuring they remain responsive to the evolving needs of their communities. By collaborating with organizations like NSVRC and leveraging the collective power of their campuses, college communities can work towards a future where every individual feels safe, valued, and free from the threat of sexual violence. SAAM serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to building connected communities that prioritize the well-being and dignity of every member.

By Naely Fajardo

In addition to New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York, there is growing attention given to the other host cities located around the country and the East Coast as the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches. With games planned for Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle, as well as the iconic MetLife Stadium in New Jersey hosting the final game of the tournament, expectations are high for the potential social and economic effects of this international extravaganza.

There are plenty of business prospects as the World Cup prepares to draw millions of passionate soccer fans to host cities across the country. The burden on infrastructure, however, becomes apparent as a critical issue. The volume of visitors poses a danger to the capacity of current systems, including transportation networks and lodging options, and might lead to traffic jams, logistical difficulties, and environmental damage.

In addition, the sudden increase in tourism could widen socioeconomic gaps already present, endangering disadvantaged areas with gentrification and growing living expenses. Strategic planning and fair resource allocation are required in order to balance the possible social costs of hosting the World Cup against the economic benefits.

Here in the greater Philadelphia area, where culture and history meet, the World Cup offers a variety of opportunities. Although the competition provides an international platform for commemorating the city’s rich history, worries about the industrialization of culture and the uprooting of neighborhood businesses and people continue to exist.

A major concern is the possibility of gentrification as developers seek to capitalize on profitable prospects following the World Cup. In order to guarantee that the advantages are distributed fairly and that Philadelphia’s distinctive identity is maintained, careful urban planning and community involvement are needed to strike a balance between the event’s economic demands and the preservation of the city’s uniqueness.

The World Cup also incites a mixture of anxiety and enthusiasm in New York City. Businesses expect a spike in tourist and consumer spending, but the city’s long-standing social divide poses a threat to the fun.

With luxury stores making big profits and small businesses fighting to survive, the preexisting gap between the privileged and the underprivileged threatens to widen. In order to guarantee that the economic benefits of the World Cup benefit every sector of society, systemic reforms and fair resource distribution may be needed in light of growing inequality and social unrest.

The East Coast and the cities that will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026 are at a critical crossroads where they must reconcile social cohesiveness with economic growth. The path ahead is full of obstacles, but it is also full of opportunities for progress.

New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, and the other host cities can harness the transformative potential of the World Cup while ensuring the safety of their communities by adopting an inclusive growth vision and encouraging collaboration among stakeholders. They can create a legacy of prosperity and harmony that goes beyond the tournament and has a lasting impact on the East Coast and beyond with careful preparation and coordinated efforts.

Amidst the bustling campus life at Rutgers Camden, there exists a vital resource often overlooked but crucial to the health and well-being of students: the STI Clinic. Situated within the campus healthcare facilities, the clinic plays a pivotal role in providing accessible and confidential services for the prevention, testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In this article, we explore the significance of the STI Clinic at Rutgers Camden and the essential healthcare services it offers to students.

Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains a topic that is sometimes overlooked or stigmatized. The presence of the STI Clinic on campus serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing sexual health and promoting awareness among the student body. By offering comprehensive services and resources, the clinic empowers students to take control of their sexual health and make informed decisions regarding their well-being. One of the key benefits of the Rutgers-Camden STI Clinic is its commitment to providing confidential and accessible healthcare services to students. Whether seeking routine STI testing, treatment for an infection, or information and resources about sexual health, students can rest assured that their privacy will be respected and their needs addressed in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. This accessibility encourages students to seek out the care they need without fear of stigma or discrimination.

The STI Clinic offers a wide range of services aimed at promoting sexual health and preventing the spread of STIs within the campus community. These services include STI testing and screening for common infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV, as well as counseling and education on safe sex practices, contraception options, and risk reduction strategies. Additionally, they offer treatment for STIs, including antibiotics or antiviral medications as appropriate and Vaccination against STIs such as human papillomavirus (HPV). They are also able to offer referrals to other healthcare providers or specialists as needed.

By providing accessible and confidential healthcare services, the Rutgers-Camden STI Clinic contributes to the campus’s broader efforts to promote a culture of health and wellness among students. Regular testing and preventive care not only protect individual health but also contribute to the overall well-being of the campus community by reducing the prevalence and transmission of STIs.

Sexually Transmitted Infections Surveillance (2022) provides the most current and complete data for nationally notifiable STIs for federally funded control programs and the CDC’s annual report further underscores that STIs must be a public health priority. In 2022, more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were reported in the United States. The most alarming concerns center around the syphilis and congenital syphilis epidemics, signaling an urgent need for swift innovation and collaboration from all STI prevention partners. In addition to the syphilis epidemic worsening, reported gonorrhea cases declined for the first time in at least a decade while reported chlamydia cases were level. The CDC will continue to examine this finding closely and look to 2023 data for better understanding, but recognize this finding may be a cause for an even closer look at public health efforts and redoubled prevention strategies. As STI services and related resources continue to rebound from the U.S. COVID-19 pandemic and mumps outbreak, we must act now to mobilize and execute a whole-of-nation approach if we hope to turn the tide. (Sexually Transmitted Infections Surveillance, 2022, 2024)

The RCSWC is committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of protected health information (PHI). The contents of any patient medical records, created, received, or maintained by RCSWC, are to be used or disclosed in accordance with this Policy and consistent with State and Federal guidelines. Everyone working in the Student Wellness Center is required to follow our Confidentiality Statement Policy and State and Federal Guidelines. Confidentiality is a professionally and legally complex issue, not subject to a thorough explanation in a few sentences. Information that a student shares with his/her services provider in the course of a meeting will be treated as confidential material. Treating information confidentially means not releasing it to anyone outside the agency without the student’s permission, including Rutgers University personnel. Under certain, special circumstances, however, information may be released without the student’s permission.

The main — although not the only — exceptions to confidentiality arise in situations involving:

Danger to self or others

Court orders or subpoena of records

Child abuse or neglect

Students are encouraged to discuss any concerns they have about confidentiality with their provider of services.

The Rutgers-Camden STI Clinic plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of students by providing accessible, confidential, and comprehensive healthcare services related to sexual health. By promoting awareness, offering testing and treatment, and fostering a culture of health and wellness, the clinic contributes to creating a safer and healthier campus environment for all. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the resources and services offered by the STI Clinic to prioritize their sexual health and well-being during their time at Rutgers Camden.
