Rutgers University-Camden students facing sudden financial hardships can turn to a campus support system designed to help them remain enrolled, according to Daniel Lee of the Student Wellness Center. That support can include help from the Student Wellness Center, the Dean’s Office and the Student Emergency Fund.

Lee said the Student Wellness Center works with the Dean’s Office to connect students with resources when financial problems begin to interfere with school. Students often raise those concerns during appointments, and staff help develop a plan to address immediate needs. In some cases, Lee said, students sign a release so the center can share information with the Dean’s

Office and advocate for support on their behalf.

The support is meant to address short-term emergencies before they grow into larger academic or personal problems. The Student Emergency Fund provides one-time emergency aid of up to $500 for students dealing with sudden crises that could threaten their continued enrollment.

Lee said students most often seek help for urgent needs tied directly to staying in school. Those needs can include testing fee waivers, books, transportation and supplemental food resources beyond what the Scarlet Raptor Nest can provide. He said many of the requests are for one-time assistance, though staff may also try to connect students with longer-term support when needed.

Financial stress can affect much more than a student’s budget. Lee said it can reduce concentration, interfere with academic responsibilities and make it harder for students to stay on track.

“Financial stress is no different from any other form of stress,” Lee said. “Students tend to become preoccupied with their circumstances which reduces their capacity to focus on school or their responsibilities.”

He said some students begin prioritizing their financial problems over schoolwork, which can lead to falling grades and retention concerns. Lee added that financial hardship is a serious issue for many students on campus, noting that many work part-time or full-time jobs and that nearly half of the student population is at or below the poverty level.

Because of that, Lee said emergency support can play an important role in helping students get through a crisis. He described the emergency fund as one piece of a broader campus support network that can reduce immediate stress and help students manage temporary setbacks before they become unmanageable.

Still, students do not always ask for help right away. Lee said some feel shame or guilt about seeking assistance, which can delay support and make the situation harder to resolve. He also said emergency funds are limited and may be exhausted, so students should not wait until a problem becomes severe.

Lee said awareness may also be a challenge. He said he is unsure how widely the resources are advertised across campus, though his staff shares the information with students when needed.

While the emergency fund cannot solve every long-term financial problem, Lee said it can make a meaningful difference during a crisis. He encouraged students to ask for help early, while the issue is still manageable.

“Everyone needs help sometimes and everyone should be open to receiving and giving help sometimes,” Lee said. “Be proactive and ask for help when the problem can be managed and hopefully to a successful conclusion.”

Lee said students should remember that campus staff want them to succeed and are there to help when emergencies arise. For students suddenly unable to cover an essential cost, seeking support early may be the best way to prevent a short-term crisis from becoming a reason to leave school.

Rutgers-Camden students looking for quiet places to work may find fewer options later in the evening, as some study areas close earlier than campus buildings. The issue affects students who commute, work jobs, or spend long stretches on campus and rely on study space outside regular class hours.

The concern becomes more noticeable around midterms and finals, when more students are trying to find places to read, write, and prepare for exams. While some campus facilities stay open later, not all spaces offer the same level of privacy or quiet.

Paul Robeson Library remains open until 10 p.m. during most of the semester and the Campus Center stays open until 11 p.m.. While library hours are extended during finals week, some dedicated study spaces close earlier which can leave students with fewer quiet options as the evening goes on.

Jennifer Levy, president of the Rutgers-Camden Student Governing Association, said late-night study space has not recently been a major complaint among students: “To my knowledge, late night study spaces have not been brought up as a concern by students recently.”

Levy said the commuter makeup of Rutgers-Camden helps explain that response. Because many students leave campus after classes end, she said fewer people may be looking for study space late at night than at schools with larger residential populations.

“Given that our student population is primarily commuters, the majority of people studying late on campus are slim,” Levy said.

At the same time, Levy said the commuter nature of the campus creates a different need. Many students remain on campus between classes and may be looking less for very late-night access and more for private, functional places to study during busy daytime hours.

“That being said, it also means the availability of spaces during the day time, peak student hours, may be limited,” Levy continued.

Levy shared that student feedback has been focused more on the need for private or closed-off study areas than on extending building hours. She said commuter students in particular may benefit from spaces where they can work between classes without distractions: “Feedback heard has been to provide more private areas for students, specifically commuter students, to use in between classes.”

She pointed to possible improvements within spaces that already exist on campus. More enclosed areas in the library, she said, could help improve access, and updates to common student areas could create more secluded places for students who need quiet.

Levy also said some newer campus spaces, including The Bridge, already offer more closed-off areas. Even so, she said space remains a practical limitation.

“The biggest barrier to creating more spaces is the lack of available space within campus buildings,” Levy continued. That limitation may shape how quickly any changes can happen. In the longer term, future development projects could create opportunities for more study areas or redesigned student spaces. Levy said the Cooper Street Gateway project, expected in 2027, may eventually open the door for that kind of expansion.

For now, the discussion appears to center less on keeping campus open later and more on whether Rutgers-Camden has enough suitable study spaces when students actually need them most. On a commuter campus, that may mean rethinking how existing spaces are used during the day as much as it means looking at evening hours.

Rutgers University–Camden says it relies on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines when selecting and evaluating classroom and study-space seating, while handling individual seating needs through case-by-case accommodations coordinated by the Office of Disability Services (ODS). ODS staff say students who experience discomfort or access barriers can request alternative seating, and those requests do not always require a formal disability classification. “Students can contact the Office of Disability Services, and we will try to accommodate their needs on an at-need basis,” said Donna Vazquez of ODS. Campus seating affects whether students can attend class, study comfortably, and participate fully in academic life. The university’s approach combines standardized purchasing decisions with individualized adjustments when a student flags a problem.

Vazquez said ADA guidance is part of the evaluation of seating during renovations and new purchases. “We follow ADA guidelines when selecting and evaluating seating,” she said. Furniture decisions can involve design planning during renovations and purchasing, with accessibility requirements considered alongside durability and long-term use.

When a student needs a different chair or arrangement, Vazquez said ODS can coordinate adjustments in collaboration with faculty and facilities. In some cases, she said, a seating issue can be handled informally. “It doesn’t always have to go through the formal disability system if a student simply needs a different seating arrangement,” Vazquez said. ODS staff may work to place an alternative chair or adjust the seating setup in a classroom when possible, depending on what is available and what the student needs.

While Rutgers–Camden references ADA standards in its facilities planning, ADA requirements function as minimum accessibility rules and do not specifically address body-size inclusion. That can leave broader “size-inclusive” design questions, like how wide or restrictive standard classroom chairs feel for some students, outside the scope of what the ADA explicitly requires. Vazquez said students who experience a barrier should contact ODS so the office can evaluate the situation and attempt an accommodation.

For students who encounter seating that feels inaccessible, Vazquez said the first step is to reach out to ODS so the office can review the situation and coordinate a change when feasible. “Students can contact the Office of Disability Services and request an alternative seating arrangement, and we work to accommodate those needs on an at-need basis,” Vazquez said.

Students and visitors entering Paul Robeson Library must show either a current physical government-issued photo ID, Rutgers–Camden ID, Rowan University Camden ID, or Camden County College in Camden ID, according to Rutgers–Camden library policy.

In addition to the ID requirement, the library’s posted policy states that the second-floor study area is limited to Rutgers, CCC/Rowan, and LEAP students.

Regina Koury, Associate University Librarian at Rutgers University–Camden, said the entry rules are enforced at the front desk consistently throughout the day. “Security at the front desk reinforces this,” she said. “It’s the same throughout the day or staffing.”

Koury explained that she could not point to a single trigger that prompted the policy, but described the purpose as safety and protection for people and resources inside the building. But, Koury did share why the second floor is available exclusively to students:

“This was a student’s request to make this space more conductive for study,” she said. She added that it aligns with other student-driven limits in the building, “It is similar to students’ request on restricting study room use to students only, no faculty or staff.”

When asked what problems the policies are meant to solve, Koury said they are meant to, “reinforce the idea that the library space is meant to be conductive for study and research.” She also shared that the rules apply broadly, and that there are no exceptions for guests or community users.

Koury said the second-floor policy has been in place since 2024, while the ID requirement and student-only study rooms have existed longer. She expressed that she has observed changes in usage or behavior following the policies and that the second floor is busy and that study rooms are frequently reserved during fall and spring semesters.

She added that one recurring issue involves noise expectations in quiet areas, particularly the silent study space. “Normally we have no issues with students following the rules, except for the silent study area,” she said, “which on occasions requires a reminder that it’s a designated silent zone.”

For students who use the library regularly, the policies shape what the space is for and who it prioritizes: an academically focused environment built around study access and quiet expectations. The “Visit and Study” page lists the current ID requirement and second-floor eligibility so students can confirm the rules before arriving.
