–Editors of the Gleaner

December 4, 2023

We, the undersigned faculty and staff members at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, strongly condemn the many recent expressions of antisemitism on our campuses and call on the entire community to reject antisemitism in all its forms.

Following the horrific October 7, 2023, massacre of over 1200 people in Israel by Hamas, an acknowledged terrorist organization that has called for the violent destruction of the Jewish state and the deaths of Jews worldwide, there has been an alarming rise in antisemitic hate in America and around the globe. On college campuses and online Jews are being attacked, harassed, intimidated, and vilified. At Rutgers, an undergraduate has been arrested and charged after making a death threat against Israeli students at the AEPi (predominantly Jewish) fraternity. Student groups at Rutgers have called Hamas’s massacre of Jews in Israel “justified” and have organized events expressing support for its heinous actions. Posters calling attention to the roughly 240 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza (now still over 120) are being torn down. Many Jews and Israelis on our campuses feel betrayed and alienated by colleagues and peers, who, consciously or not, repeat age-old antisemitic tropes, such as the notions that Jews are overly powerful, bloodthirsty, or vengeful.

Muslim and Arab students have also reported being intimidated and harassed on campus. We condemn any expressions of anti-Arab or anti-Muslim sentiment, just as we condemn antisemitism, and affirm the rights of all members of the Rutgers community to walk their campuses without fear.

We affirm our commitment to free and open exchange. In that spirit, we refuse to yield the public discourse at our university to those who promote dishonest narratives, engage in vilification and slander in lieu of reasoned debate, or support, excuse, or remain silent about terror or antisemitism. At its core, the mission of the university is to increase knowledge and understanding and to seek truth in all its complexity. Faculty and students must be able to talk to one another honestly and civilly about deeply challenging issues.

We call upon members of the Rutgers community to stand against the murderous regime of Hamas and to recognize the right of both the Palestinian people and the Israeli people to live in safety within secure borders. We ask the university administration to create a comprehensive plan to address antisemitism specifically, and we ask our colleagues to commit to fostering open, honest inquiry, free of hate and demonization, on the Israeli-Hamas conflict and all other related issues at our university.

–Editors of the Gleaner

November 27, 2023

To the executive board of the Rutgers University Adjunct Faculty Union,
and the executive council of the Full-Time Rutgers University Faculty Union:

We are writing to object to statements issued by the executive board of the Rutgers University Adjunct Faculty Union and by the executive council of the Full-Time Rutgers University Faculty Union. After Hamas’s October 7 massacre of 1,200 innocent people, mostly civilians, both unions released statements that we consider to be flawed on factual, political, and moral grounds. These statements have angered and alienated a large portion of the memberships of both unions, as well as of the larger Rutgers community. To maintain their claim to represent their memberships, we ask both unions to withdraw these statements.

In response to the Hamas massacres, the executive board of the adjunct faculty union, representing about 3,000 faculty, endorsed a statement from a radical anti-Israel group called Jewish Voice for Peace. JVP, taking the extreme position that Israel should no longer exist as a Jewish state, promotes one-sided propaganda to delegitimize Israel. Its statement about October 7 touched only glancingly on the massacres and instead focused on Israel’s response. The statement falsely and outrageously described that response as “genocidal.” Using an age-old antisemitic trope, it accused Israel of having brought about the terrorist attacks on its own citizens. It made no mention of widely acknowledged legal and moral differences between deliberately targeting civilians, which Hamas does, and accidentally killing civilians in wartime, which Israel has done.

As problematic as the statement endorsed by the lecturers’ union was the undemocratic procedure following in making the endorsement. The executive board of the adjunct faculty did not consult its membership before making its decision, and it ignored suggestions to follow a more moderate path, such as endorsing the statement of the national AAUP. It has also ignored calls to withdraw or change its statement.

The Full-Time Faculty Union has likewise let down its membership with its own statement. In late October, the executive council announced that it was considering a statement and convened a Zoom “office hours” session for members to discuss a draft. The draft was badly one-sided, omitting or misstating the nature of the conflict in significant ways and prescribing political and military policies aligned with Hamas’s goals. Among the flaws: the draft statement spoke of a “crisis in Gaza” but not in Israel; failed to mention Hamas or terrorism; endorsed a letter by a self-selected group of Rutgers professors critical of President Jonathan Holloway’s heartfelt concern for the lives lost on October 7; and waded into foreign policy, calling on President Biden to broker a ceasefire in the war without conditioning that ceasefire on either Hamas’s release of some 240 innocent hostages or on the surrender of Hamas’s leaders.

Almost every single union member who spoke at the October 25 Zoom “office hours” meeting criticized the statement on these and other grounds. Members urged the executive council either to discard it or to modify it significantly. They proposed specific revisions to address the shortcomings. Executive committee leaders promised attendees that their criticisms would be taken into account. But several days later the executive committee issued a statement that was virtually unchanged from the controversial draft. They had made six revisions, largely cosmetic. The final statement retained the implicit endorsement of the anti-Holloway letter and a call for a ceasefire that was not explicitly conditioned to the release of hostages or on bringing Hamas leaders to justice.

The union has every right and even a duty to weigh in on matters of academic freedom and the campus climate. But it should not be issuing statements on geopolitics and foreign policy, especially when it is obvious that no consensus among the membership exists on the issues. Rather than follow the reasonable and decent path of confining its statements to areas where consensus exists, the unions took stands that they knew stood in opposition to many members’ views. For the sake of comity, and to retain their claim to faithfully represent their members, the union leadership should withdraw these statements.

The first stop on the train ride around haunted spots near campus is the Chancellor’s Office. Located at 303 Cooper Street, this office was built in 1867 and is the former home of South Jersey statesman Isaiah Woolston. The building’s charming vintage facade hides the inconspicuous grave markers lying just behind. With ghostly whispers echoing down its halls and possessed, moving objects, the infamous third floor is considered to be one of our campus’s most haunted places. Stories from the early 2000s about this office range from minor to terrifyingly creepy, but no new updates have since been reported.

Photography by Anel Fajardo

Our next stop, right next to our nursing building, is the Camden City Hall Jail on 530 Federal Street. As frighteningly early as 2014, the Philadelphia Inquirer covered a haunting and invited the all-volunteer South Jersey Ghost Researchers to investigate. The sixth floor raised many red flags, with the researchers’ equipment signaling a presence lurking nearby. This presence was later identified as Ed. The chilling discovery somewhat relieved the staff, whose suspicions had been roused while working there.

Perched on the Delaware River is our next stop, the Battleship New Jersey. Now a museum, the famed warship sits on the Camden Waterfront, right across from Philadelphia. Previously investigated on the popular TV show “Ghost Hunters,” this ship has been rumored to house the wandering ghosts of soldiers on her top deck. Itching to see if this rumor is true? Take a tour of the ship this season and see for yourselves. For more information on tickets, go to https://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/

Schools are not spared such horrors. Visitors to H. H. Davis Elementary School on 3425 Cramer Street have claimed to hear chains rattling and see a tall, dark figure lurking behind the school’s auditorium curtains. One has even heard through the grapevine that three people have died on the premises.

Start the spooky season off right by touring these sites and enjoying different parts of Camden. Our sister city, one of the oldest in the U.S., has a boatload of history attached to it, and you can access it all just by crossing the Delaware River.

Per CBS News, the Eastern State Penitentiary is considered one of the world’s most haunted places. With over 500 testaments to its capacity to petrify, one of the oldest prisons in the U.S. is a hub for hauntings and a literal graveyard—there have been documented suicides and murders on its premises. Day tours are offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as their famous Halloween Nights, which feature five different haunted houses inside the prison alongside themed bars and harrowing tours.

Excited (maybe a little scared) to visit these sites? The Paul Robeson Library is offering students a chance to visit the Penitentiary and other museums for free with free museum passes for students, faculty, and staff. Go with a group to visit the historic Eastern State Penitentiary if you’re scared to go by yourself.
By: Acer Paiste

This spring semester, our NJPIRG Students Chapter launched with the hopes of talking to thousands of our peers and making tangible change in our community. We’ve been able to make such significant progress on our work, and are so excited to go into the fall semester

continuing to fight hunger in our communities and saving the bees in our home cities. Before we get to what’s coming, we want to highlight what we’ve been able to do this Spring.

We start every semester with a Recruitment Drive. Through dozens of class announcements, hosting fun tabling events, and phone banking, we were able to reach thousands of Rutgers Camden students, and collected hundreds of interest cards from folks who wanted to get involved with our work. From there, we officially kicked off our campaigns.

Save the Bees

Bees are essential to our lives. They pollinate 75% of all of the foods we eat, and their pollination helps protect outdoor spaces we love, but we lost 51% of our bee colonies in 2021 due to multiple factors such as climate change, habitat loss, and pesticide use. That’s why in the fall semester we started a campaign to get the Mayor of Camden to declare the city a Bee Friendly City, per the Bee USA Standards. To broaden our efforts and to allow students to make an impactful change closer to their homes, we collected petitions not only for the city of Camden, but for other students’ home cities as well. Collectively, we set a goal of 300 petitions and ended up collecting 397, 111 of those petitions being designated to the city of Camden alone! We delivered these petitions to the city halls of the three cities that the most petitions were signed for: Camden, Cherry Hill, and Pennsauken.

Hunger and Homelessness

This semester, Rutgers – Camden students focused on giving what they could to local nonprofits to facilitate their volunteer efforts to fight hunger. Every Friday starting in March and continuing to the end of the spring semester, students hosted Art Parties to make centerpieces and

placemats for the dinner services for Cathedral Kitchen. The centerpieces were toilet paper rolls wrapped in construction paper so that dining service attendees could take them home. The students did an excellent job at making them creative and colorful!

Affordable Textbooks

Rutgers professors across all three campuses have taken strides to make textbooks affordable by partaking in the Open and Affordable Textbooks (OAT) Program. OAT is an incentive program that awards research funds to Rutgers faculty who make their courses more affordable for their students by using low-cost materials, library content, or Open Educational Resources (OERs). To date, the program has saved Rutgers students an estimated $6.25 million. The goal of the program is to support course material affordability at Rutgers, promote the use of open and affordable educational resources, and empower faculty to innovate their teaching through the use of open, free, or library-licensed materials and teaching aids.

This semester, we sought to recognize the professors who make a difference in their class affordability and the librarians who make that possible by filming them for our OER “OERscars” video event, in which we gave faculty an Oscar statue and recorded these faculty and librarians speaking about what OERs and textbook affordability mean to them. We were delighted to award Professor Tracie Paulson an OERscar for her efforts in making her classes more affordable by providing no-cost materials to her students.

Looking Forward

Now that we’ve secured our funding for the next three years, we’ll be diving right back into our campaign work. For the fall, our Chapter has voted to continue running our campaign to Save the Bees. Building on the hundreds of petitions we have from community members, we’ll be working to continue building support for Camden to become a Bee Friendly City. We’ll also be working to recruit and train more student leaders to build up our chapter!

A Thank You

All of this work is completely thanks to our team of students who dedicate so much of their time to making a difference. All of our work is so dependent on our community, and we could not have done the work we did without the entire Rutgers Community. From the professors who let us do class announcements, to the administrations who helped send out campus wide emails, to the staff who helped us reserve rooms, and of course the students who came to our tables and engaged with us, we are so appreciative of everyone’s support.

We are looking forward to a Fall semester filled with fun campaign events, but above all, we can’t wait to continue making New Jersey and Rutgers a place where students can organize, and win.

According to the Polar Bear Plunge’s website, for over 50 years, it has provided free annual sports training, competitions, leadership opportunities, and health screenings to over thousands of athletes. This is thanks to many fundraising events, like the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside.

The primary goal of the Special Olympics is to create a new world of inclusion and community by providing a platform for others to show their skills regardless of ability or disability. With over 4 million athletes participating each year, their global movement only continues to expand with time.

Twelve of our Rutgers University Police Department officers joined in on the event as the Freezing Fuzz’s. With the support of their friends and family who traveled down, the Freezing Fuzz, along with thousands of other plungers, jumped into freezing Jersey waters, which reached roughly 43.5 degrees. Many people were dressed in costumes, furs, and special gear for the event. Shops and stands normally closed for the winter opened as many showed up for the annual event.

The RUPD has been participating every year since 2017. Currently, two officers of the RUPD have family members who would be considered for the Special Olympics. In an interview with both Officer Ronca and Officer Rodriguez, who participated in the event, they commented on their experience with the event and what it has meant to them.

Officer Ronca says,” It is a good way for us to rally behind our officers and raise awareness[ for the Special Olympics].”

Officer Rodriguez mentioned some of her family members were diagnosed with Down syndrome, including her older brother Angel, who participated twenty years ago in the Special Olympics. He competed in track, gavelin, shot put, and special Olympics bowling. The Polar Plunge meant a great deal, as she has always been active in donating and raising awareness for the cause. Rodriguez commented, “It means so much to participate in the polar plunge because, I would like to say, I have an athlete in the family.” Since she could remember, her family has been very supportive and active in her brother’s competitions.

If you are interested in participating in future events for the Polar Plunge, please visit their website for information on next year’s event:https://www.plungeseaside.org/event-information/.

In partnership with the FBI, the RUPD is hosting a Sextortion Seminar in the MPR room in the campus center on April 25th during free period. There will be refreshments and treats available for those interested in joining the presentation.

On February 17th of 2023, President Jonathan Holloway released a Budget Address to the University concerning the university’s finances.

A recent article done by Rutgers- New Brunswick alum-adjunct professor Hank Kalet commented on the contents of the address. It sheds light onto a somewhat rocky narrative painted by Holloway.

Holloway notes that the update falls in between good and bad. The university has reached more than 25% of research revenue since 2020 as well as nine faculty named fellows and numerous students be awarded academic and research awards. All seems promising but Holloway notes the challenging times ahead due to “financial headwinds”.

Kalet comments that this language generates uncertainty in the direction of where the university is headed. Since June 30th, the faculty and staff unions at Rutgers have been without a contract. The Union and faculty are asking for change especially in the way the university is run. Often in order to cut costs, faculty and staff wages are brought down as they make up much of the academic budget.

Kalet says “This is about priorities. Holloway and those around him are prioritizing austerity for faculty and students, while telling a story of a “beloved community” that just does not exist at this point.”

Rutgers is just an example of the wrongs done by the corporate model. This isn’t just a faculty issue but a problem potentially affecting students. The uneasiness felt by faculty is undeniable and its no doubt that students will feel the effects of this uncertainty. We as students are reliant on the aid of our professors and staff so by not providing them job security, to say the least it is troubling. How can we expect our professors to teach under severe circumstances? Who is to say that these cuts will stop at just lower wages for staff but limiting course selections and resources available on campus?

By keeping informed on the issue and raising awareness, this will keep the conversation ongoing and put a spotlight on the university to provide for their staff. For more information on the issue, please visit https://hankkalet.substack.com/ and https://rutgersaaup.org/. This is our fight, we stand with our professors and staff.

In recent news, the Rutgers AAUP-AFT is asking to cast votes to strike authorization for a fair contract for its faculty and staff. They are organizing two important panel discussions titled “Solidarity Beyond the University” and “Solidarity Within the University” that will be live-streamed on the union’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RUaaup.

News of the development of a South Jersey LNG Export Terminal has been circulating on media platforms.

The project will transport liquid methane (LNG) over a 200-mile truck and train route from Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, about an hour’s drive northwest of Scranton, to a port on the Delaware River in Gibbstown, New Jersey, where it will be loaded onto ships.

According to RUC Green Thumbs, a Rutgers-Camden organization dedicated to spreading awareness about environmental issues, they have been advocating against this new development for the risks that it poses for Camden residents and the environment. They have started a petition with over 240 student signatures. Here is the link to the petition if you are interested in putting a stop to this development: https://rutgers.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_54EzpSLPprKYQ06.

This plan to develop this terminal was proposed by New Fortress Energy, and it will go through parts of South Jersey and East Pennsylvania. The issues of transporting LNG via train or truck could pose a threat to residents in low income and minority areas and even in our own backyard, as well as several childcare centers and schools like Rutgers University-Camden. LNG is a hazardous and explosive chemical and transporting this in highly populated areas will be disastrous.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on this development back in May of 2022. Statistics done by Delaware Riverkeeper Network estimates over 1.9 million people could be at risk. If the development continues, air-pollution levels will worsen in the South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania area. Traffic-induced pollution is linked to various health concerns like heart attacks and hypertension, and pregnant women are at extreme risk as this could cause preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirths.

LNG is extremely unstable and a train derailment that happened in East Palestine, Ohio is evident of this danger awaiting the South Jersey area. These trains were transporting vinyl chloride, another highly explosive chemical. The accident damaged the environment and polluted the air and water supply for residents. This derailment shows the risks of transporting lethal explosive chemicals.

Including the dangers of transporting LNG, climate change also needs to be considered. “The Building of new gas infrastructure propels the economy further away from clean energy and tethers us to the dirty, fossilized energy of the past,” said Elizabeth Cerceo and Tracy Carluccio, for The Inquirer.

Over 90 organizations have signed a letter asking Governor Phil Murphy to reject permits for the Gibbstown terminal. As a community, we must raise awareness of this important issue that will closely affect citizens. Another petition with more than 5,000 signatures is out by the STOP LNG BY RAIL PERMITS on Action Network.

The Digital Studies Center organized a discussion called Telling True Stories with its key speaker being Matt Fulton, BA/MA alum, filmmaker, and author of several books. He is currently working on a film that tells the story of the 1949 mass shooting in Camden. Matt was joined by Dr. Robert Emmons, a documentary filmmaker and head of the filmmaking program here on campus. They talked about challenges and resources to nonfiction storytelling and filmmaking. The event took place November 15th at the Digital Commons.

Mr. Fulton began discussing the 1949 mass shooting that happened right here in Camden. A World War II veteran, Howard Unruh, killed 16 people in Camden with a German pistol during a twelve minute walk. They played a historic film reel of the crime that showed the scene of the crime and the murderer being taken away for psychological evaluation to Cooper Hospital. The reel followed with testimony from several eyewitnesses with one stating, “The murderer was very calm and collected, not once ran.”

Inside the life of Howard before the shooting, he was secretly gay and had numerous relationships with men during his stay at a boarding house. The summer before the shooting he was dating a man named Van. There is no other information about Van besides his first name. The Night before the shooting, Howard was supposed to meet him at a theater but Van stood him up. He stayed for a few movies then later on went home. The next day he attempted to kill his mother with a knife then proceded to continue on his murder spree.

Picture of A Dark Horse Comic Issue #23 of Gateway to Hell: the Howard Unruh Story

Now Mr. Fulton’s first discovery of the case, he was at a family party and a family friend, Paul, approached him and said casually that the first mass shooting was in Camden. This caught the attention of Fulton, his friend then continued on recounting the details of the case.

Difference in approach to film making on this project, Matthew wanted to write a screenplay about the crime. Researching the story which then required him to look into all the police records and news clipping. Mostly all the information he used in his research was all in writing as the records were not digitized. His approach to creating the screenplay was to not only be authentic but to understand “it’s not what’s wrong with you but what happened to you?”

Both Mr. Fulton and Dr. Emmons discussed the ethics about telling true stories. Fulton on the subject said, “I am figuring it out as I go along when it comes to ethically documenting this story.” Fulton acknowledges that he does make up some parts of the story when it comes to Howards’ day to day as long as it does not contradict a historical record. He says “I am writing about people who died violently. I want to write to keep it as authentic as possible.”

Fulton referenced the new Jeffrey Dahmer netflix show. He believed “it is a prime example of what not to do.” Wrestling with this idea of being true yet neutral is difficult when it comes to storytelling. In the Dahmer series, the protagonist is somewhat given redeemable qualities which distracts from the crime the culprit has committed. He had an issue with this portrayal of Dahmer. With memes and news covering the new show, Netflix recently came under fire for labeling the show as an LGBTQ+ story because it portrays gay men in a bad light. Fulton believes having that label is not a bad thing as it is a part of Dahmer’s story and “we should not pick and choose what representation is out there.”

Going back to the Howard case, Fulton noted there seems to be no key reason for the attack. It seems Howard was upset about his gate being damaged the night before after his date stood him up. He did add that one of his victims was the wife of Thomas Cohen and some members of his family. It was known that Howard had issues with Thomas and went into his pharmacy looking for him. A survivor of the attack was a 13 year old Charles Cohen who hid in a closet.

What was interesting is his sexuality was not publicly reported yet his psychological records discussed his first gay experiences with a cousin. Below is a copy of the records of his psychiatric evaluation.

One of the attendees asked, How do we separate the killer from the man? Fulton’s approach is to show the feelings of Howard and his struggles with accepting his sexuality. By not focusing on all the bad but the life before the attack, this allows a full picture of the subject instead of a narrow view. It is not meant to pity the subject but to provide the facts and the truth of the individual.

This event is the last of the alumni speakers for the semester. For more information on upcoming spring events, please follow the English Department page on the Rutgers website.

“Comparison of urban problems between Korea and the United States through quantitative data analysis”

As part of the Fall 2022 Seminar Series by The Center of Urban Research and Education (CURE), guest speaker Dr. Yoonhwan Park discussed the similar problems both Americans and South Koreans face regarding urbanization on Thursday, December 8th.

An advanced technological and ever-expanding country like South Korea still faces a handful of disadvantages to its growth, including urban composition, poverty and inequality between classes, gentrification, transportation, housing, and fertility rates.

Technology seems to be the driving force behind its growth and a way for the country to connect seamlessly with others. Unfortunately, this has brought a wave of people from rural areas flocking into the big cities, primarily Seoul, the country’s capital. Seoul, a flourishing city filled with vibrant culture and an infinite scope of opportunities, faces many challenges, among them being overpopulation.

Photography by Justin Harris

According to Dr. Yoonham Park, roughly 9 out of 10 Koreans live in the city. With almost 10 million people residing in Seoul, it remarkably surpasses the 8 million people dwelling in the NYC metropolitan area. Of course, this growth was not overnight but started back in the early 20th century, when Korea was considered one of the poorest countries on the map and, as it is now, one of the most powerful countries in the world.

Change came shortly after the devastation of the Korean War in the 1950s. In such a short amount of time, South Korea implemented in the 1960s ways of modernization by moving away from agriculture. The South was able to fully recover from the effects of war and advance their way of life.

Due to this transformation, architecture and, most importantly, transportation improved, allowing more citizens to travel from the suburbs and rural areas to the cities. Interestingly, suburban areas are very different from the ones Americans are familiar with. Most people picture a picket white fence with a big yard, but in South Korea, it consists of apartment buildings. Dr. Yoonham Park stated that the suburbs resembled more like cities than the typical standard American suburbs. This design is an environmental effort done by the government to conserve more energy.

In previous years, Seoul was experiencing suburban growth, which reached its highest between 1990 and 2000 at 120% population by provincial level jurisdiction. This growth rapidly decreased as more people migrated to Seoul and other major cities. Recently, to reduce congestion, the government has decided to elect Sejong as the country’s administrative capital to spread out the influx of population.

The battle isn’t over, as the government must tackle the dangerously low fertility rates. As most of the population lives in cities, the cost of living is one of the main contributing factors to the decline. Another factor in the decline is the high cost of childcare. An apartment in Seoul can go for over $1 million. Ultimately, the newer generations are more focused on earning a higher living; they simply cannot afford to live in the city and have a traditional family at the same time. The Korean government has spent $200 billion on combating this issue.

Now the cities have more older generations than younger ones, which is of grave concern. Korea has one of the highest poverty rates in the world, alongside the United States. 40% of the poverty rate consists of the elderly. Curious on the subject, I asked Dr. Yoonham more about the issue. For context, he earlier explained that the poor, especially the elderly who are homeless, are a top priority, and the country has made ways in which to provide aid or assistance. Those who are over 65 years old are allowed to ride the transit for free.

I said, “It seems South Korea has a somewhat positive view compared to the very negative and criminalized approach the United States has toward those who are homeless, specifically the elderly. Is there a reason why that is?”

Dr. Yoonham Park responded, “Korean culture has this respect for the elderly and feels it is their duty to help. Most of the homeless people there do not sleep on the street, do drugs, or commit crimes. They do not cause trouble.”

According to a 2020 study by Statistics Korea and the Supreme Prosecutors´ Office, the crime rate in South Korea lay at about 3,311 crimes per 100,000 people. Several regions showed crime rates above the national rate, led by Jeju, which recorded about 4,371 crimes per 100,000 population.
