Freshman middle hitter Chelsea Schmotzer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) collected eight kills in 13 attempts, and sophomore Rebecca Brown (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) had six kills in 10 attempts, to power the Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team over Rosemont College in three sets in its season opener here Wednesday night.
The Lady Raptors won by scores of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-12.
Junior opposite/outside hitter Katherine Crosby (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added four kills, seven digs and four service aces for the Raptors, while sophomore middle hitter Rebecca Calabro (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added a team-high five aces and collected five digs.
Sophomore setter Steph Miller (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) notched 15 assists and added two kills and two aces.
In the opening set, the Raptors ran off the first seven points and were never caught. They put together strings of six points and a pair of five-point runs.
In the second set, Rutgers-Camden overcame a 10-7 deficit behind the strong serving of sophomore Kristin Koloski (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). Koloski, who had three kills, two aces, one block and one dig in the match, served five straight points to give the Raptors the lead for good.
In the third set, Crosby held serve on four straight points to break a 5-5 tie.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Friday and Saturday in the Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College. The Raptors face Lincoln University Friday at 3 p.m. Later that night they play Harrisburg Area Community College in a match that won’t count toward NCAA statistics.
On Saturday they will play Gallaudet University and Penn State-Mont Alto at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
