Levon Helm

After battling throat cancer for nearly 10 years, Levon Helm died last week. He was 71 years old and died in the company of his family. He will be remembered for his membership in The Band, where he played the drums and mandolin as well as singing such songs as “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”

Private Plane with Incapacitated Pilot Crashes

Last Thursday, a plane circling the Gulf of Mexico crashed 170 miles off the Florida coast. The pilot was reported to have been “incapacitated” at the time the plane crashed. As of now, no information has been released regarding the origin of the plane, nor about the identity of the pilot.

Joint Chiefs: U.S will not send troops to Syria

Last Thursday, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsy, reported that the United States will not commit to sending troops to aid Syria out of the turmoil it currently finds itself in. Also, Secretary-General Anders-Fogh Rasmussen of NATO said that his organization will also not commit to sending troops to Syria.

Drought Forecast for Southwest

According to Federal Forecasters,  in the Southwestern region of the United States, parts of California, and other Southwestern areas, the drought is expected to get worse and worse through July. Aside from affecting farmers and rangers, the drought increases the risk of wildfires.

U.S Chopper Crashes, killing four in Afghanistan

During bad weather while flying in Southwestern Afghanistan, an American Black Hawk Helicopter crashed, killing all 4 service members inside.  Lt. Commander James Williams of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) said that it was “unlikely” that the helicopter was downed by enemy fire.
