Athlete of the Week: Andrew Pierson

October 4, 2010 6:12 pm 8 comments

The Rutgers-Camden University golf team joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference two years ago, and since then has won two straight NEAC championships, earning the conference’s qualifier in the NCAA Division III Golf Championship. Needless to say, the team is filled with talent. Last week Andrew Pierson shot a round of 79 at the Susquehanna University Fall Golf Invitational. Pierson and fellow teammate Frank Wilkinson (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) tied for 13th out of 69 golfers.

The Gleaner has chosen Andrew Pierson as Athlete of the Week for his contributions to the Rutgers-Camden University’s golf team.

What made you decide to attend Rutgers Camden to play golf?

I never wanted to move too far away and Rutgers-Camden was the closest school with an NCAA golf program. I just wanted to play but I had no idea how successful we would be to this point.

Now that you are here, how does it compare to what you expected?

I wasn’t expecting such a good team, but 5 or 6 other great players came in the same time I did which helped us by being competitive with each other fighting for the top spot.

Besides practicing golf, do you have another fitness routine to prepare for the season?

I work at a country club and am always working outside, so I don’t have a set workout routine but that usually keeps me in shape for the season.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions before a match?

A lot of golfers have superstitions and rituals, but I like to just get out there and play. The less I have to worry about the better I usually do, so I don’t like putting any of that in my mind.

If you could choose a professional golfer to play a round, who would you choose?

I would have to play with Tiger Woods. I feel like I learn a lot just by watching him play on TV and would love to get a close up look.

If you could choose a non professional to play a round with, who would you choose?

I would like to play with Tony Romo. I love the fact how he is a great golfer on the side of his NFL career.

What’s your favorite course to play on?

We’ve been to many great courses since I came here so I can’t choose one. I grew up playing public courses so when we go to the upscale country clubs they’re all amazing to me.

Have you ever hit a hole in one?

Never had a hole in one.

Who is your favorite athlete?

Based only on athleticism I would have to go with Tiger Woods and Mike Vick. They have their problems off the field but I feel like they’re both doing right now and are still the two most exciting people to watch in sports.

It’s 2020, where are you and what are you doing?

I would love to find a job in the golf industry; no matter what I am doing I love the sport and it keeps me interested.

Andrew has hit a hole in one in his young golf career; he was too young to remember, but I do. I’m his grandfather. I lived 500 miles away and the first chance I had to meet him he was already walking, but still in diapers. It was at the Jersey Shore, on a miniature golf course, where he hit the hole in one, using a putter. The whole family was proud, and his reward was a dry diaper, which he really, really needed. Loved that kid from the start. Now, he can play an entire game without need for any changes in his wardrobe.

Andrew is not only a wonderful athlete, but a wonderful person as well. We are so happy to see you doing so well. Michelle is especially happy that you are attending her alma mater!

  • Tom Pierson Sr

So, you’ve done good Andrew. I’m your other Grandfather
and I only live a few miles away. I like a day on the links with you, your Dad & Uncle Jim. Sorry we can’t do the tournament this Saturday with the gun club, but there will be other times I’m sure. Keep up the good work and I’ll bet you could have used a wardrobe change yesterday, playing in all that rain

Ok, throwing in my turn at taking credit, it was definitely the annual tournament with Betsy and I where you got your skills. Ha! All you–so proud of you, so especially proud how you remained calm during tryouts this year and after tryouts, and your average improvement every season. 69 average next Spring! Don’t trust anyone but me to be your manager-you know its true.

  • Best of Luck to you and your teammates for the remaining part of your 2010 Fall Season and beyond! I know that you’ll accomplish great things in your life!

  • Betsy Clifford

Congratulations Andrew! Stay focused and have a great time. It’s always a pleasure to play in the annual tournament with you and your Mom. You should be very proud of yourself and your game.
